Car ran out of gas with gauge showing over a quarter tank
I was on the highway and the check engine light came on and then, less than a minute later, the car wouldn't accelerate, went into limp mode and gave me just enough time to get onto the shoulder. I thought it was the fuel pump and when my brother told me he added gas and it fired back up, I was pissed knowing full well the gauge wasn't showing below a quarter tank. What causes this to happen?

Hi,, I hope this helps.. Your fuel gauge might not accurately display the actual fuel level in the tank. This could lead to your car running out of fuel even though the gauge shows a higher level.
To determine the exact cause of the issue and understand the error codes related to the check engine light and limp mode, it's crucial to retrieve the fault codes from the car's ECU. Using a full system scanner like the Youcanic scanner is an excellent way to pull fault codes from all control modules in the vehicle. These codes will provide more specific information about what triggered the check engine light and the loss of power.
Once you've retrieved the fault codes, they can offer a clearer picture of the problem.

It's a 23.3 gallon tank and when just under half a tank it takes 18 gallons to top it off. It's been 7 months of just keeping it topped off to avoid another situation of getting stranded.
