Is the car parked on a slope? If so, there might be enough pressure on the release to prevent the internal lever from disengaging. Sounds unlikely, but perhaps...

To make certain:
You can feel the "notches" as the shift lever moves.
The position indicator in the instrument cluster changes to match the shift lever position.
When you move the lever into Reverse, you can feel the transmission engage and try to move the car.
When you move the lever to Neutral, you can feel the transmission disengage, and the engine will rev up as the throttle pedal is depressed.
When you move the lever to Drive, you can feel the transmission engage and try to move the car.

If all of these are correct and true, it sounds as if the problem may well be inside the transmission - something in the Park linkage or levers inside.

Thanks for the input.. no the car is fortunately in my garage on a flat surface.. I'll check if gear leaver and the cluster are in sync.. isn't the 5gtronic solinoid operated? perhaps park solinoid is stuck some how.. the transmission is working through out the gears.

The W220 5-Speed is mechanically shifted, including PARK. (You have posted in the W220 Forum.)

Are you certain that the transmission is in PARK? Any possibility that the parking brake is stuck, or something similar?

Hopefully your shifter linkage is no longer connected, or you are extremely low on transmission fluid. W220 has common shifter selector issue not coming out of park. But if you can move selector that is not the issue. Your transmission may have failed if your shifter linkage rod is still properly installed and if your fluid level is okay.

Thanks again guys.. gear leaver and cluster are in sync.. yea I'm aware that this is w220 thread.. i just don't have the knowledge about internal workings off the transmission hens asking you professionals.. my car is an 03 s430 with 160.000 km.. have no idea what that's in miles but it's a low mileage car in sweden.. I'll chek linkage and fluid level.. how a about electrical connectors. fuses and such?

If you go back to Post #2, try each step as outlined, and let us know exactly what the results are for each step, we can make MUCH better guesses.
