Front IR windshield

Hey,

Checked manual and w220 wiki regarding this. It suppose to have Infrared transparent areas, but looking on my windshield can't spot anything. Checked number on windshield and it is: PPG SUNGATE M448
As I said, tried every angle possible, even with sunglasses, still there can't find it.

Could it be that only available area is near front mirror?

It's not an IR area, it's an RF clear spot. Top of the windshield, right of center.

HHmmnn:

I thought on my S600 it refers to the spot at the bottom center for any cell phone nav positioning.
Still learning?

There might be more than one RF window on the windshield.

Yeah... As I thought. Problem is that my radar detector doesn't fit in that area. Need to think of making a bracket or something...

The IR coating on W220 glass is intended to reduce interior heating, and reportedly contains iron, which has the side effect of reducing radio wave penetration. You might have noticed that your hand-held cell phone has poorer performance inside your W220. There are several "openings" in the coating that are designed to improve RF penetration - both entry and exit. It is probably correct to call these clear areas either IR windows or RF windows, but they are openings in the IR coating to improve RF penetration.

Infrared transparent areas

The infrared reflecting glass also prevents the transmission of signals through the glass by in-vehicle electronic devices (e.g. electronic toll collection devices). To allow the use of these devices in the vehicle, two infrared transparent areas (1) and (2) are placed in the windshield.
  • (1) Mounting location for electronic toll collection devices (infrared transparent)
  • (2) Infrared transparent area (pass-through for electronic signals)
  • (3) 31.5 in (80 cm)
  • (4) 19.0 in (48 cm)
  • (5) 1.75 in (4.5 cm)

Does it visualy have that spot? I mean can it be spotted on certain angle? Because I tried everything, with/without glasses, even was looking on certain angle when the sun was shining.

If it was readily visible, they wouldn't have given very detailed measurements...

I've spotted mine when cleaning the front of the car from a 3/4 angle and the front doors open. It's a clear square spot and probably harder to see if the sun is shining.
