hello,my 2004 s430 shifter will go to drive fine, but if I want to shift into reverse, it will not go past neutral?????????? if I turn the key off, it will go to park no problem!
isnt there a linkage on the transmission its like a metal mechanism with a cable i think just near the transmission
it seems to be electrical in nature, since when I turn off the ignition, it can be moved to park
The actual shifting is purely mechanical - one metal rod with a plastic bushing on each end.
There is an electrically-operated safety device built into the shifter unit. It's purpose is to prevent you from moving the shifter lever out of PARK unless you are pressing the brake pedal. I don't know if the solenoid also prevents you from going from DRIVE to REVERSE or PARK.

Hello,
I drive my car for years with it. Most likely that is the issue with a broken pin inside the gear shift box, you must remove the gear box to fix the issue in other posts (1-2 hours work). For me, I just apply the brake pedal at the same time when moving the level to Neutral and immediately release the pedal when the lever starts going to Neutral to Park. You have to practice it a few times and learn from it.
Hope it helps.
