S550 Test Drive

Well I finally was able to test drive the new S-Class, I am most impressed with the vehicle. I have to say that the 382HP motor would blow the doors off the old W220! The effortless kickdown power was amazing!
Very queit and smooth as glass. Interior is nice and the controls and compartments are not cumbersome. Cup holders suck though.
I am still looking at the A8L but it will take alot for me to buy it over the MB at this point. MSRP will be 4-5K lower than W220 which is great considering all the quality issues we had previous. AMG is available on the first group of cars as well. The one I ordered has AMG and is coming in at 95K even.
Too bad I could not drive that one home from the lost. First week in March is when I drive it back to Parker!

So did the dealer have the S550 with the AMG in stock? Or did they give you a date the car would be built or delivered? I was told the AMG package would not be in the first batch of cars to be sold.

Yes the AMG style will be the one I am getting in March.
The AMG car won't come out until late 06 or early 07
Body style won't change regardless just some fender flares and bumpers is all just like the last 220. I can't stop thinking about that car. I will test drive the Audi A8L tomorrow.

I highly suggest finding a W12 model since it'll compete more closely price wise when you add up the options on the S550. For the extra 5-10k on the A8L W12, you get a 12-cyl engine and one of the nicest full leather interiors I've ever seen.

the W design is not that great, it has accelerating masses in so many directions. It is overly complex for no reason.

Thanks Colorado, did they quote you a cost for the AMG styling package? I really like the rear exshaust treatment on the pictuces I've seen.

I've driven the A8L and loved the interior. The massive center console with all the controls at your finger tips works logically. The 4.2 motor needs torque. I would wait for the S8, which will probably be a short wheel base car like the old S8 however. I would think you will be able to purchase one for just under 100K.

My understanding is that the new S8, at least in the USA if not elsewhere in the world, will be the LWB model.

I think if you look closer, you'll find the price differential between the A8L 8cyl and 12cyl is more like $45,000. According to audiusa.com, the A8L 4.2 stickers at $72,090 with the W12 at $118,190. I do however agree with your comments about the interior. It is what the Mercedes should be.

I can't really find that many faults with the new S8. Looks like it should be a fantastic car.

We will be in the same dilemma is to choosing the S550 over the Audi A 4.2L. We'll have to wait and see what kind of pricing we're getting. Nonr of these decisions will be made until next year so I'm sure 12-14 months will deliver some more great things from MB and Audi...

I think you have a tough decision between the S and the Audi. I drove an A8L and it had the most comfortable driver's seat of any car that I have driven. I was a little reluctant to go with Audi, as there seems to be a lot fewer dealers and that might be important when traveling.

I will have all the numbers in a few days and will let you know.
The problem here really is it all boils down to and audi or a MERCEDES isn't it?
I think so too.................
That 382 HP motor is absoulutly flawless in my opinion. I wonder what the warranty will be though.

I've decide to pass on the A8 myself. I am going to go with a new S65 I think. But you really can't go wrong with either of these cars -- they're both great cars.....

I was actually comparing the price of the A8L W12 to a loaded S550.
