There are always similarities between different brands of vehicles. So what this copy that? As long as the design appeal to most of the people, then who cares? There might be 10% of the car looks similar to that 10% of another car, but the other 90% looks different right? Good enough.

we all know now that the interior of the S looks 7erish. but you don't have to say that over and over again.

Mercedes all the way!
SmartKey with infrared technology with lots of recycled ignition codes, right? Every time you insert the Smart Key, a different code is read up to (100,000?) times
regarding the rotary controller, well the fact is it probably is the best possible interface, next to the "up down arrow" control system on the previous COMAND. in an interface without a freely moving cursor, a trackball or mousepad would be hard to use. ever tried using a mouse in a moving car? it's really difficult to navigate accurately because there's too much freedom of movement. the rotary controller integrates both simple "up down left right" commands, and quick scrolling. in fact, it is the exact same system as Apple's iPod except that one is touch sensitive.
the next best might be a touchscreen, but while they are very good for selection, i have yet to see one that's easy to scroll through a huge list of options.

The problem with a touch screen is that in order for it to useable it would have to be mounted much much lower than eye level, otherwise you're in for a very inconvient long reach. The selector knob is probably the best interface. It got a bad rap thanks to the 7-series i-Drive (which I haven't used since it was redesigned). The 5-series i-Drive is not bad at all, and I really like Audi's MMI system. I still haven't had a chance to use the MB system, but I'm sure they learned from the best and worst of both MMI and i-Drive.
