I cant remember is the W220 had the wood ceiling grab handles, but the W140 did for sure. My dads friend has one and he wont part with it - he says its the last TRUE benz

Great pictures. You essentially have exactly the same car I have however I put the AMG wheels on mine. Mine is Obsidian black. Is yours? Also, how much did those door sill inserts cost including install? I also thought it was the ONLY thing in the new S-class that looked a little cheap. In fact, I even picked at the surface as it looks like a plasticky dullness to it. I thought it was a plastic coating left on it from pre-delivery inspection and that it might peel off revealing a nice shiny chrome sill like on my late CL. (Oh , I loved that car!)

. Just a side note
, I'm surprised you don't own a fully loaded 12 cylinder VW Phaeton or Bentley Flying Spur. Those cars are extremely well built and are popular in your part of the world. If you like woodgrain, the Phaeton and Spur possess a furniture store full of wood and are extremely customizable. You can even get stone inlays placed where normally wood would go. You go to Dresden Germany and pick and choose anything you want in these gorgeous cars. The Phaeton is an extremely nice car and in countries other than the U.S., are bargains.Enjoy your Mercedes though. The W221 is by far the best car in the world IMO.

Mercedes S-Class (W221) AMG
The Phaeton is not being sold here. I totally agree with you for the interior luxury and/or choices available for Bentley Flying Spur. However, the reason for not going for it are:
1. Exterior design still looks too old to me and it is not my favorite.
2. Don't like the common front (E-class, Jaguar, etc).
3. Looks too long from the side.
4. It doesn't have the muscular arches of the new S.
5. If you remove the badge and try to forget it is a Bently, it just looks like a another Ford to me.
6. Buttons are scattered all around the interior as opposed to neat arrangement in the S.
7. I work in IT field, so those LCDs, COMMAND mouse controls and electronic gadgets in the S suits me better and operating them is not an issue. Actually I made use of all the features in no time.
8. Too expensive in comparison to an S.
9. Local after sales services are not that good.
10. Top resale value cars locally here are Mercedes S-class and Toyota Land Cruiser especially white ones.
11. Interior smells different than a new S.
12. It doesn't have a mercedes star.

They did - I wonder why they took them out for the W221. They were a nice touch.
At least we can still upgrade the interior with aftermarket wood accessories.
I had MB put in the wood phone cover like they have in the S600. It really makes the car have a warmer feeling.

AsianML, the sills are not illuminating, alas. I loved that touch on my M45.
The door sill inserts were $425 installed. Mine is flat black, though if I had it to do over again I would probably go with Obsidian black or Silver. I let a few posts here about obsidian looking brownish in intense light scare me away. Based on my NSX and on the Lexus's that congregate like locusts at my office garage, I thought flat black would be the ultimate when maintained properly. Unfortunately, I learned with this car that Mercedes non-metallic paints have a distinct orange-peal texture when scrutinized. At least the nano clearcoat does live up to its billing and does a ton to minimize swirls. I couldn't even hazard a guess as to how many hours I spent buffing out swirls and fine scratches on the NSX.

http://www.12step.org/steps/index.php. I noticed that my v12 badge looked crooked when I first posted those photos. A quick double-check revealed that the logo is dead square: it is the combination of the sloping driveway and the curved side skirts that make it look crooked in the closeup photo. You can see in the full car side shot a few pages up that it is in fact level. Hmmn, maybe I can get a discount from Mercedes on my next car to make up for the defective design that makes the logo appear crooked from common angles

Shot this today out in the Red Rock Canyon area...turned out so nice I thought I would post it before I trade it next week for the GL550. A really great car!

Put in the aluminum door sill inserts on my 600. The stock inserts were the one thing about the car that jumped out as shockingly cheap and plasticky to me. I highly recommend these for any S-class owner!
I found the inserts difficult to photograph satisfactorily. They are a much better improvement in real life than my photography skills can show.
