Rear Brake Rotors

Just wondering, I observed on my W221 S550 Sport that it had non ventilated solid rear brake rotors. If you go onto MBUSA's website it states that it has ventilated rear brake rotors.

My 2000 W220 S500 Sport even had ventilated rear brake rotors. I haven't seen solid rear brake rotors on an S-Class since my 1987 W126 420SEL.

From website:
Brakes Dual-circuit power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes. 13.8" ventilated, cross-drilled front discs and 12.6" ventilated, rear discs. 4-piston fixed calipers on front and 1-piston floating calipers on rear.

Anyways I haven't gone back to the dealer since to see other cars but do any of you have the same rear brake setup?

I know very little about brake rotors but the front rotors are "cross drilled" meaning they have holes in them. Could you be referring to the holes in the front rotors and the fact there are none in the rear rotors?

To describe:
Non ventilated solid rotors look like a solid disc.

Ventilated rotors look like two solid discs sandwiched together but hollow in between. Simply put like your front rotors but without the holes.

As for the fronts they are considered cross drilled ventilated rotors.

I will post the pictures tonight of the W221, W220, and W126 rear brakes. As you will see the W221 S550 rear brake setup is no comparison to the W220 S500 rear brake setup unless they now bias more of the braking towards the front brakes.

Thanks for the explanation Joseph...I now know something about ventilated brakes...:-) I hope you can get the issue resolved and explained by MB as to why the change.

If anything, no complaints about the performance and quality of the car. I've been through all S-Classes since the W116 450SEL and this 2007 W221 model IMO so far compares to the quality feel of the W126 and prior.

Why I say W126 and prior is because those are the only ones that never gave me a single problem well over 250000 miles. As for the W220 my complaint is on the electrical and transmission.

Well anyways back to the brakes, my thought was they should not of stated that on the website if the car did not have it. As for new models, I believe it should meet or exceed the previous models performance and specification but to me whatever, it's all about having the latest.

Well see what happens with this one, so far so good after a little over 3 weeks and 4000 miles.
