Question: Quietness and Smoothness?

Hi guys,

I was a big fan of the last generation S-class, and I have to admit that we I saw photos of the newest model (W221), I thought it was pretty ugly. But now, after having sat in one during a recent auto show and seeing some of my neighbors' cars, it looks very, very good.

So, my question is, just how quiet is it? How smooth is its ride? I am considering purchasing one, even though I am relatively a short guy 5'6").

So please fill me on the details: What is the S-Class ownership experience like?

HiHI

You can read lots of threads on how much improved the new S Class is over the previous.

Jack and I (OK to use ur name jack??) went from 220 to the 221 and we both have nothing but complete praise for the improvements......... its night and day. smoothness and quietness is almost scary!

S Class is the only way to go. You will love it over BMW, Lexus, and etc... Enjoy your new "S Class"..............

There are at least several dozen threads here that deal w/ your questions in great detail, but the simple answer is that the S-class (W220 or W221) is, IMO, the best sedan in the world. I know the new one has many improvements over the "old" one, but I still love my old bucket-of-bolts. And when I consider spending at least $100k to "step-up" it gives me pause. I still might do it, but I will always feel the W220 is the true classic car design. As much as I like the ...21 (v the ...20) I will always feel like it is a "one-off" from "the original." This isn't necessarily a bad thing it is just a consideration when it comes to how one spends their money...

My S500 is/was the quietest, smoothest and most comfortable automobile that I have ever been in untill I drove a new S550...it is smoother, quieter and quicker...to state to what degree it is better is subjective...but is absolutely an improvement. Any decision between the two becomes a choice of your money vs. your desire to drive the best.Bear in mind that for the price of a new fully equiped S550 w/Amg Sport Package ($105K +-) you could own two '04~'05 S500s equiped comparably

Have you ever driven a tank?
Now put leather in the tank.

That's the S-Class.

Nothing quite like it...

Just plunk yourself down in the personally adjusted leather seats, push the start button, place the car in gear and enjoy the most quiet, smoothest ride available in a luxury sedan today. There is no describing the complete coming together of technology and creature comforts as you glide along at 75mph (more if you like) not hearing anything but the music on your stereo. Don't hesitate to take the plunge...sooner the better

Just picture yourself getting into this everyday...

Jack,

You're making it tough on me as that would be the same interior that I prefer.
I am still waiting to see if the new 06 S65 deal through eBay works out for me.( The engine/brake pkg are just too tempting at the right price even though it's a W220)

The only thing I hate about the W221 is that rather ugly steering wheel and no center console tranny shifter (like the w220).

So if it were me, I'd probably go for the "classic" W220.
