My commute is generally in normal rush hour traffic, the regular speed limit is 40-45 mi/hr. The thing is I have explored almost everything else, from ABC settings to manual shifts at least once--before getting bored with it and not even bothering anymore--but remembered to my surprise that cruise control is not one of them.

Before actually getting the S600 (used, private purchase) I had "dreamed" of owning it for a long time, but I guess by the time I got it, the infatuation with all the features left way for a very busy work/life balance, that the type of car I drove ceased to be something I paid much attention to--some people call this maturing or growing up, and I seem to have done a lot of it in the past two years.

That said, I am still very much a car geek that I can basically blurt out all sorts of specs, even for makes and models I do not particularly care for. In fact, I have "won" bets on certain arguments regarding info on cars against people who actually owned them and supposedly are car maniacs. Example: this dude was insisting that his Murcielago has come with factory 19 inchers, and revolted when I told him the tires on his ride were merely 18s. I dared him to check the sidewall of the tire, and what do you know, I had quoted him the correct diameter, width, and offset.

To me all the above is great, MB has a lot of technology to enjoy and play with but it is built in a way that one does not have to play with all the technology to enjoy the car.

Today going to the shore I decided to try it again and I can say I hate it. It really has a mind of its own and will sometimes scare the crap out of me. I try to let it go on its own but sometimes it waits until the last minute to slam the brakes and even then doesn't slam them enough needing me to brake or we are crashing. I tried all distance settings and they all are not reliable.

You have to be kidding?: I constantly use the distronic plus feature. Their was a time I almost went 250 miles non-stop and never touched a pedal. You may want to have something checked on your system. I find this feature to be awesome.

Do the brakes lights always light up when the distronic system slows the vehicle down? If so, I bet I have some angry tailgaters because I would find it silly to light up the brake lights when it is only slowing the car down gradually and lightly.

If the brakes are being used. If it's being slowed down by drag and friction gradually, I would imagine no. But if the brakes are being used (sudden stopping, etc.) I would think some sort of law would require brake lights to activate when the brakes are in use.

This is correct. You can always try it, at night you can see the brake lights operating, if you do not dare to look back yourself, can ask somebody else in the car to verify it :-)
