Do the oil change. I have done it on my AMG's and well its nice to get all the metal particles from break in out. Though the oil will be black, it doesnt mean its bad yet. But for all purposes and longevity of the engine, its a good idea.

Filter and Oil Change, $100 tops.

Waste of time, effort and money. If it was required MB would indicate such. Join the 21st century guys...take it in at 13,000 or 1 year and have the recommended services performed.

Who knows what's in the engine when they built it! As MB Fanatic said, there could be little bits and peices of metallic particles in there. I certainly wouldn't want that to be in there for 12k more miles.

Preventive maintenance!!

My dealer would love you. He sends me these long letters about the terrible heat and dust in Las Vegas and tells me how the engine needs special treatment. He suggests I change the oil every 5000 miles to keep it clean and running smoothly.

Times have changed...tolerances and techniques have changed, lubricants have changed...what the "old school" did is no longer the norm. Follow what the factory says and you will not have any problems.

You started this "sh&$!!!" so I just wanted to keep it alive...LOL

I'm with Jack on this one. These new MB engines are built to seriously tight tolerances and the deburring just isn't there like in the old days.

The tranny, though, that's another story. The heat beats them up. I know plenty of people, myself included, who have blown auto trannys thanks to inadequate fluid changes. Phoenix is even hotter than Vegas and it happens a lot. I can say that when I traded my S500, the tranny had already gone to hell. Horrific shift quality. And that one was "sealed" so you can't even change the fluid!!

Ok it's 2:30 am. Time to go down to the garage and say good night before bed

We're not talking about regular oil changes just yet. This is post-break in we're talking about here. I just don't trust the same oil that and all the metallic particles in the engine from the factory for another 12k miles.

That's the nice thing about sleeping in the car...you just have to turn out the lights. I leave the ambient lighting at level 2...makes a nice night light for trips to the you know where....

its only 100 bucks I know but you guys are wasting your money. Change the oil as rec'd by the factory. There are no metal shavings in the engine, if there is you have serious problems.

Well, you only get to break-in the engine once. Although I know it is not necessary but I've always change the oil out at 1k break ins. Been taking it to the same econo lube shop for break in oil change for my past 3 cars, I bring in the oil and they do the draining and charge me $30 bucks for it which is a rip off since they only charge me $12 for the same work on my Lexus, their explaination is on the Benz they have to remove a couple screws to take off the plastic cover in order to get to the drain plug.

I agree with others here that is really isn't necessary... however, spending $100 on a $100k vehicle doesn't seem like a bad idea. I don't drive my E-Class much, but I have changed the oil every 1,000 miles, in part because I don't drive it much. Maybe it really doen't help, but it can't hurt either...

I always change the break-in oil/filter on my race engines in my muscle cars but I have yet to do so on any of the MB's that I have owned.

Don't get me wrong as I see nothing wrong by doing so. If it lets you sleep better at night than by all means do it...I just don't think it's neccesary

I just really thought about it & all things considered... 3 years down the road when I trade or sell off this tired old sedan (that I won't be able to stand the site of) this break-in oil change would not have made the slightest difference???

Well... I am talking all tough but the truth is that I still have fond memories of my 04' S and all the wax sessions, trips to the dealer for service, My 2 year old screaming to go on Dad's "Go-Go" & the hot a$# that dripped on my seats!!! I really do have a love affair with my MBs!!!!!! FU all!! I am changing my oil!!!

Just kidding!! Cheers to all S Owners and future S owners!!!

Don't you know that it adds like a few more minutes to take out the extra screws? That's like a few more minutes the mechanic could've had for his break period that you took away.

I agree with others that it's a complete waste of money and time and it doesn't get you anything. These cars are built very well and if the manual doesn't say change it at 1000, then there is no need to.
This is my 3rd Benz ('00 E320, '04 E500) and I averaged an oil change every 10-13k miles.
Enjoy your new car.

Regards.

Since you will be changing oil often, have you thought about also getting a magnetic drain plug? not sure who sells them but I would be interested as well.

ok...so now it is your responsibility to inspect the oil and report back to us how many metal shavings are in it, so we can all follow your lead. ;-)

Apparently, if anyone is serious about an oil analysis, Brookstone Laboratories, 416 E. Pettit Ave., Fort Wayne IN 46806 is the company to use.

They will send you a sample cannister for free, and then once you send it to them, a very thorough chemical analysis costs about $20 US. I ordered one because of our discussion on the "lifetime transmission fluid" and plan to have that tested as soon as I have the service done.

Hope this is of some value,
M
