S550 Reliability so far?

How's the S been so far to date? Any glitches or problems? I bought an 03 E when it first came out and had lots of little headaches. Need a bigger car with the baby on the way. Thanks!

distronic plus had a problem. the gear lever could be broken down, also the e-hand brake has big problem potential. but S is the flagship of mercedes if they ruin it, it will ruin the mercedes

From what I have heard, the W221 is the first vehicle in the "old-familiar-tanklike-quality" campaign. I truly hope this is true. However, the only way to accurately measure this is after a few years. The W140's overall had very minor issues, the W220's overall alot of issues. Now, we wait and see with the W221.

So far with our S600, there's an engine idle pulley that has been making a rattling/buzzing noise. The part was ordered and it's going in Monday to get replaced. Also, the car has gone through 4 quarts of oil in 13k miles. Those are most likely specific to the 600.

Other than that, the left side bolster of the drivers seat makes a rattling noise whenever it inflates (part of the drive dynamic/multicontour seats). I kept thinking there's a bolt loose and rolling around in the door, then realized it was the side bolster. A few times we get a ESP and distronic plus inactive message or something. It goes away when you restart and the dealer can't find anything wrong.

Update: I just played with the seats some more. When you inflate or increase the seat back side bolster, it sounds like it's pushing a small plastic ball inside. When you deflate it, the air comes out and it sounds like the ball falls down and bounces up and down a little. I checked the passenger seat and it hear it doing the same thing.

Does anyone else have this problem with their drive dynamic/multi contour seats? I'm wondering if it's normal. We usually leave both seats on the drive dynamic 1 setting. Thanks.

I heard only fossss sound when I deflate them and pissss sound when I inflate them. I tried this with w220. These are the sounds of air but I think yours is totally different. And it is very bad to see that a S600 making such troubles. In Turkey I don't why but we love S500 (S550) more than S600. I think the 4matic option is the reason.

Almost 34000 miles and 1 year old this April and no problems whatsoever. Oil level does not go down from the max fill line between the 15000 mile oil changes. Changed oil at 1000, 15000, and 30000.

Now thats some reall good mileage, because around that 30K mark is where lots of W220 owners reported problems.

I've had my LE since April 1st with 6100 miles and no problems. One time the passenger side rearview mirror did not return to its original position after reversing.

Once I have 25 of these in my panel, I'll provide repair rates with quarterly updates.

After taking delivery in August my TPMS has been my only issue. However, this is common where I live because of the chemicals on the road used to melt the ice. That stuff ravages exposed electronics.

I also have the drive dynamic seats mentioned above but have not had any issues.

The car has been a joy to own.

I havn't seen many come in to the shop other than for service, or seasonal tire swaps. For a brand new model it seems to oddly problem free.

Only 4,000 mls so far but love the vehicle. Used to purchase MB then switched to Lexus when MB ran into QA problems. The S550 is the cream of the crop - best MB I have ever owned. Unlike the Lexus 430 I traded, the S550 is a true drivers car. Handles like a dream.

I have 2,000 miles on my car now and a fair number of options including ABC and the drive dynamic seats, etc. In other words, a lot of things to potentially go wrong. But I haven't had any issues at all so far.

Build quality, fit and finish, overall feel is markedly better than other Mercedes I've driven or been a passenger in since the early 90s (in my opinion) The more I drive the car, the more obvious it is that they really stepped up their effort on this one. Hopefully this new attitude carries over to the next E-class as well the other models.

From the early reports on the C-Class that seems to be the case. It is so clear to me that Mercedes dropping the ball in quality and reliability is what gave Lexus such a strong come up from 1998 onwards. Before that Lexus sales weren't that close to Mercedes, but then that ML arrived.

I just bought a used 2007 S550 4Matic with 40000 miles on it. Here are the items I am having addressed by the dealer:

1. Vibration in steering wheel at idle
2. Vibration in steering wheel at 1200-1600 RPMs while driving
3. Oil leak from rear top of engine
4. Something leaking under the car, looks like engine oil but not sure
5. Rear climate control fan inop
6. Squeaking from ic area
7. Steering wheel hops when turned lock to lock while stationary - such as backing out of a driveway
8. Bluetooth unit loose

A few more that I can't think of right now. I love having an MB warranty on a used car - they can make it perfect for me for free

Also, I looked through the VMI and saw an air compressor replace, engine control module replace, and a handful of RPM and angle sensors replaced.
