ECU in the S550

Does anyone on the board have this? I am thinking about it - but at $1795 from Renntech - its NOT cheap........ and i am told it offers a .2 second 0-60 time. So 5.2 instead of 5.4.

155mph Speed limiter is removed and 186mph is now the limit

Horsepower increases by 20bhp from 382 to 402

Torque increases by 20ft lbs from 391 to 411

Not to sound "cheap" but this would be a $2000 job (including tax / installation)

Thats $1000 per tenth of a second in a 0-60 clocking.

What do you all think? Thats all the information I have at this time so I thought i'd present it to you all for your thoughts.

Well I thought about that. They also have Headers at Renntech...... if bought as a "package" it would be $1795 for the ECU, $4495 for the headers, or ordered together, it would be $5995 (plus tax and i assume installation)

You should try giving DMS Automotive a call. http://www.dmsautomotive.com/ They are based in UK but I think they have someone in the states who can work on the ECU's.

Yeah Renntech has great packages and its not cheap, but they have (ECU, Headers, Air Flow) I am sure they can work something out for you or a great deal if you go with package. good luck though

The Renntech ECU and headers are quality products and Renntech has been around for 18 years. Some dealerships even recommend Renntech and Kleemann products. I wonder why this one doesnt?

Hiya
I really dont know. He just said that he didnt think it was a wise idea.... He did however say Headers would not be a problem....... just that the ECU was not a good idea.

We dyno-ed a stock SL 550, and the a/f ratio was very lean and not linear. So i am confident the ECU upgrade does help.

He also mentioned that it "raises a red flag" when u have a problem in the future if they see an ECU tweak. For 5 years - he never once gave me bad advice - so i dont think its general "stealership" stuff.... it is MB MAnhattan anyways, so factory dealership......

I dont think Renntech ECU has ever caused a problem at the dealer before. When it comes to tuning, Renntech has always been conservative and safe.

For the most part the dealership sales guys dont have a clue....but you know him better than we do....maybe he races on weekends and knows his stuff cold. Some sales guys only care about selling....not the inner workings of the car. You are lucky if he is what you say he is.

I know what you mean. I think if it were anyone but this particular Service Advisor...... i would do what i wanted....... but you know.. in 5 years (since owning the S500 back in 2002) of knowing him - he has never ever tried to cheat me, or allow the typical "stealership" image apply to me. I had an aftermarket warranty after the S500 went over 50,000 and whenever it looked like i would have to pay for something, he got on the phone and made sure that whatever my problem in the car was - he figured out how to make it THEIR problem. Took a special interest to make sure i had a loaner car - even when none were available - he'd figure something out. This year - he got me free car show tickets. Emails me just to check in and see how everything is going. etc. I know this is what a S.A is there for - but theres always an extra added touch. I cant imagine him telling me not to do an ECU for selfish reasons. I even asked if the dealership could do it for me, and he said no, they dont do things like that. So he wasnt even trying to steer my business to him / dealership. Same deal with headers. He wasnt tryin to sell me anything - just giving me advice and said "from one friend to another" i advise u not to go through with this.
