2007 S600
Absolutely stunning car. Much prettier than the Ocean Drive IMO. I don't know why MB makes duplicating cross-over automobiles. I hate the Maybach exteriour and a stretch S600 would be much better. I'm not sold on the Ocean Drive and yet this S cabrio would fit the bill just fine.

The only thing I would change on this 4 door cabrio would be to somehow hide the rear door handles (or better yet, all 4) so it's not so obvious from the side that this is a 4 door. It needs streamlined handles that do not show the rear door handles at least.

I think this might have been a precursor to the Ocean drive concept, if you read the blurb they mention a concept and the ocean drive was a concept ?

I would like to see them try to do something , I have heard rumours of a CL cab , so I don't know if there would be a market for both, but the last full sied four door i remember was the sixties Lincoln

The engineering to make a 4 door S convertible ride and handle properly would be a challenge

Mmmm is right. If you look at the date of the article, it is from November, 2006. What was shown LAST January (2007) was the OceanDrive concept. Rumor - and I stress RUMOR - is that an S-Class convertible has been approved for production, provided they can work out some pretty thorny structural issues (rigidity, wind noise, how long it takes to put the top up and down, etc.).

I fondly remember the 95-96 E-Class convertible. A beautiful piece of engineering, and technology has progressed significantly since then, but they could only do the E as a two-door.

Now, if I could chop the top of my S63, and keep all the great handling and other attributes, I'm there! And for the engineers than can make that happen:

The 2 door variants are always the best choice

There was a pilot project team put together for introducing this car (Ocean Drive / S Cabrio). This does not guarentee that the car will come out, or even in these variations, but the plan that was most liked called for 3 models. A diesel (S420 CDI), a gasoline (S600), and an AMG (S65). The idea was to keep the car as a super premium car, but still offer reasonable choice to the consumer.

Concept

I like the idea of the hardtop convertible, I saw earlier mention of a soft top convertible and to me the car would lose so much of it's luxury without the hard top.

I have an old 96 SL320 with a soft top and a hard top and with the soft top up, no comparison to a hard top. Now the 2006 SL600 with the retractable hardtop is a different story.
