How fast is the S550
For some time I've been hanging around here looking at the pics, reading some threads.
I am 18 years old and may understand the guy's situation.
My dad has a C-class and my mom might want to have an S-class. They are surely not lacking money, but they do not drown in it either. I know that they could have paid me a new Mercedes too without bleeding their banks accounts.
The thing is: they insisted that I paid my own Merc.
And so did I. And I then ended up with an old 300E 1992. But you know what, I paid it on my own. Even if I made all kind of hysteria crisis, even if I insulted them and yelled names at them (being young sometimes means being kind of stupid) now I am happy even if my car if 15 years old instead of being a brand new SLK350, let's say. I know what it means to work, to desire a car, and the great feeling you get when you buy it with your freaking own money. It's way more rewarding than when given to you
Both my parents have University diplomas, my mother's got a Ph.D and I have got ambition to do as much. I don't want to flame anyone; but I don't think giving a 70K$ car to his son makes him realize what money, ambition, work, satisfaction and the notion of setting and reaching goals are all about. Now, when I look at a S-class on the street, I have the strong conviction that one day, a shining, brand new one will be sitting in my driveway, and that anything necessary will be done so that could be achieved.
(And I live in Quebec, Canada, where there is some very wealthy people, but way fewer than in California for example. So even in wealthy neighborhoods, a kid in an old Merc is not going unremarked)
All the fuss around my car, funnily, made me grow. Before I had the potential to become some spoiled mummy's son. Now I think I have a whole different view of many notions regarding money and accomplishement.
Sorry for the long and maybe slightly boring topic!
And... The S550 is fast to anyone's opinion, simply not neck-slappingly fast like the 63s,55s,600s,65s.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
I had to search wikipedia to know what it means. Here, between high school and university, you have got what is called CEGEP
It's the place where you have your "pre-university, general formation" courses in human sciences or natural sciences if you want to keep on studying, or you can do some 3-year courses called "professionnal formations" that sends you directly on the market.
I am entering University in september in Psychology. Hopefully I'll be able to switch to dental medecine or medecine (psychiatry) eventually.
I am not the first of my class, unfortunately, as my average is not of 98%. But you know, I always said some 88% doctors might be greater humanists than some 98% ones...
Sorry for the OT!!
let's take a look:
mature 18 year old (the good kid): insightful comments about value and satisfaction etc...
spoiled child with E63 (the idiot kid): pop up questions like "how fast is S550" .. duh ..
i think the reality is quite obvious how we should raise our children...

This thread is retarded!! LOL...
Anyway, the S550 in terms of acceleration and power is very fast, but in terms of top speed is as fast (or slow) as the C230.

Finally a properly grown-up 18 year old.
My father was wealthy and sent me to the US with full first year's tuition paid and more money than I would need in incidentals. Within a month of getting here, I landed myself a job as a busboy at the local country club, and never stopped working. Because I became an RA in college, they gave me free room and board, so I used that money instead to pay for the second year, supplementing it with my $250/week from the club. I will never forget the pride I felt when I told my dad that he did not need to wire me anymore money. The car I have been most excited to buy ever in my life was a black 1993 Ford Probe, the first car with my own money ($2,600). Getting a BMW M5 7 years later and a S600 a year ago has not yet matched that feeling of fulfillment. By the way, I am thinking I have had enough of the S, and am actually thinking of getting back into the midsize segment, as it fits my age a bit better, and is not quite as pretentious--these cars do make you feel like you are showing off at times. A second hand CLS55 or a good late model M3 (perhaps I can spring for the brand new one if not exceeding 60K). Well, there was my "rich dad, poor dad" story, sorry for the inconvenience.
I totally agree with Vraa. No matter the price tag of the car, it's the person inside that counts.
You spent 154 posts telling owners of W221s how "in" you now are that a relative of yours bought an S550.
Fast forward a decade. You cry to dad and stomp your foot until he caves and takes a loan out for a used E63. You then proceed to going onto an S forum to solicit attention about your E-class. Winner!
