So having just purchased a close to 70K GL450 4Matic and with major home improvements on the horizon, cash seems to be stretched out. We were looking to inaugurate an S550 into our garage but the likelihood of this is bleak.

My father is nto so much into used cars but maybe getting some sort of CPO'd low mileage S may work? I was thinking, and maybe Im jumping the gun here, but how does an 05 S55 AMG with 34K on it sound with a listing price of 60K?

The true dilemma is that we want a nice sedan to travel around in, although the SUV is dynamite as well but a sedan for shorter distances seems more applicable. I mean, our budget may seem to be around 50-60K and we want the size of an S-class for that price tag. Now, before we jumped into the GL450, when I crashed the MDX, and had a 550 on order, we were thinking of going with an 04 S55 AMG with 32K on it and my dad was seriously considering this vehicle. What's the best combo we should go for in an S55, pertinent with model year and certain features relative to that year along with the least amount of problems?

If you get the S55, obviously pick the later years 2003 or later. I say this because the refresh done to the S class was just more than cosmetic.

You had the addition of Pre-Safe, better drivetrain, more stable electronics and build quality was improved. If you want the S55, I would suggest a 2005 S55. It should be no more than 60K and if you get lucky you can even find one cheaper than that. Do not get the 2000-2002 S class as they were riddled with problems.

I agree with Fanatic. Hit the nail on the head about getting post 02 models. Better nav screen, chrome trim improvement inside the doors and sills, wood trim got a facelift with chrome trim on it too and the power was increased in the engine output. Taillight and headlight assemblies were improved also. The wheels looked better IMO. I would like to add that I feel that this 05 seems priced fine. I would jump on it. It is priced close to half the original value and 34K miles isn't great but isn't too bad either.

Pre-03s are slugs! It's the N/A engine...so while it's decent fun in my C...the supercharged 5.4 is more suited for the S.

I was just looking at the Ray Catena site and I saw a 2003 S55 with 32K only! How much do you think they'll asking price would be?

Get the 05 with the extra 2K miles. It will be more reliable in the electronics department. However, call up Ray Catena or pay them a visit ot see how much they want.

I agree too. But check it is 2003 PRODUCTION (or later) not just SOLD in 2003 or later.

Amongst the many major improvements all S class cars produced in 2003 and later had all the steel panels fully galvanised.
