My first thoughts are between the 140 and the 220. They got rid of the boxy look at that point. I loved the vaulty 140. I had a 1994 and 1996 W 140, a 2000 model W220 and my current 2007 W221 so I do know what each are like. Headlights curved around a bit on the later models and the 220 seemed much more modern looking but to me I couldn't tell the difference between it and some Jap cars. I'd take the W140 over the W220 ten to one as the Chrysler effect was just kicking in.

Bottom line:

1st place goes to the W221.

2nd place goes to the W140.

The W220,... well, let's give it a congeniality award and leave it at that.

3rd place goes to the W126. ( I owned one of those too! 1986 560SEL)

I believe you are talking about the looks. I don't think that can be measured, each person would be entitled to have his/her own opinion.

Doing the comparison more technically, I see the wheel cab hubs on a W221 can appear on a W220 too but not on a W140. The star on the hood appears different on all three (would not necessarily mean one part from the other would not fit at all).

I cannot think of other common exterior parts, or should tyres be considered?

From the wheel centre hubs I would also conclude the W220 and W221 have more common exterior compared to W140 versus W220 where I did not find any common exterior part
