Rear view camera in drive?
#7
I hope you didn't think I was making a joke towards you. I actually was playing off of another thread about those kids halfway destroying their dad's car doing burnouts. I figured that your question was related to tinting or sunshades (or curtains , like in a Maybach) or something like that.
Regardless, I'm certain getting the rearview camera to work in Drive is possible but probably gonna be hard to get that code cracked by a technician.

Another way would be to use the AUX video input but that would need wiring changes.

The way it was done for the DVD video, it might not be that difficult (for a person familiar with the CAN signalling). Make the camera and comand assume the car is on reverse through CAN hacks? I assume you would want this to be temporary, switched off to normal when you don't want to see the rear view.

Sometimes mine comes on randomly, I must push like some magical button
. But seriously, sometimes i'm on the freeway and changing radio stations and then the rear view camera comes on. I have one of the after market cameras.

I just had a chance to look closer at my friend's S today: The way it works is he uses presses of the mute button to activate the features: press and hold to turn on dvd-in-motion and press twice to turn on reverse camera.

He had the rear camera installed aftermarket. On mine I have the factory installed camera but when i called they said mine had to be programmed differently from his but would work in a similar manner. Ill find out more when I get it done next week.

Sounds like "someone" listening to the CAN bus from N80 (steering column control module) for "mute button messages" and inserting new CAN comands accordingly. Neat.

after market camera
I am interested in the after market camera for a S550 '07. Can you give me information on what manufacturer, installation problems or not, integration with existing navigation equipment, etc. Appreciate any comments you might have...Thanks

I got the camera mod done today. It was really easy (at least for mine anyway). I got to watch the whole thing and it took about 20 minutes. They went under my dash and pulled out my original module and replaced it with another. They also had to go into my trunk and change a wire that had something to do with the camera itself.
Now I press mute again and I get the reverse camera display up on the monitor even when i am driving in addition to the video in motion.

Refresh my memory please. Didn't you get this done at mid city in Chicago? How much did that cost to have done?

Yes it was them... The in-motion module was like $490 but that was part of a whole package deal where I got everything done at once so they were willing to do a package price. When i went back for the reverse camera feature they traded out the original module for the new one for $75. They also had to pull a panel in the trunk and make a wire connection so I'm not sure what the exact breakdown was between the upgrade price and the labor.
