Daytime Running Lights

Why do DRLs stay on at night. I usually keep my switch on "A" for automatic. I also keep my DRLs set to "on". However, I just recently discovered that when I turned my switch to OFF tonight, the lights remain ON. I wanted to sit in the car while leaving the motor running but I didn't want the lights to be on. It is aggravating that you can't turn all lights off at night by simply changing the switch to "O" .
You have to go into the menu and turn the DRLs OFF in order to go totally dark at night.

P.S.: I was not "parking"

I understand you would not accept even "parking lights only", that should work.

In EU it is not allowed to idle the car for more than a minute, or was it two, I guess MB thought it makes no sense to switch off lights in the dark in this case when the engine is running. It isn't good for the engine anyway but of course you may feel it should be the owners' decision to ruin the car (although if MB allowed this, then dumb drivers started complaining MB USA, one really cannot please all).

Have you asked if the dealer could program the lights the way you want them?

It's such a rare occasion I would do this it's not worth the trouble to take it to the dealer. I'll just have to turn off the lights with the steering wheel menu buttons if/when I ever need to. Parking lights only is a position I didn't evaluate fully at this time. Can't answer that yet.
