MB + BMW join forces on engines?

Interesting (if perhaps vaporous) story here on a number of fronts... Kacher does have good contacts though... Item 3 about BMW + MB sharing engine technology to replace current V12's and/or possible downsizing is interesting... As stated in other posts I still see no solid evidence of any "next generation" V12 engine architectures appearing from either manufacturer any time soon... Yep even the new SL still has the same good old V12TT...

Tend to doubt AMG and BMW sharing engine tech (perhaps MB and BMW can share hybrid/diesel tech to sell taxis/SUVs in Chindia/EU and various Podunk US locales)....personally, have always been underwhelmed by BMW tech/innovation/execution, esp re: motors, gearboxes, brakes, steering, chassis dynamics, safety, etc...and have test-driven enough various M's over yrs to understand why BMW doesn't sell any $150K+ cars (not even many $100K+ cars)...and lacks a high-end repeat buyer base in jaded places like Greenwich/BeverlyHills/Woodside....

That said, am curious re: role of this MCT box in '09 AMG S/CL....am hearing rumors box was developed for Fall08 SL Blk....and to be used in subsequent supercar being developed w/?HWA....

Also, am intrigued by the Car magazine uk "scoop" that SL Blk will have some ?650hp+ motor....is it a new V12?....a turbo'd 63?....a more developed 65? Isn't head of AMG engine development (and lead engineer in developing 63 motor) the same gentleman who previously led the engineering of the CarreraGT motor and who, like many engineers, has espoused a view that NA motors are more elegant (and preferred) from an engineering/dynamics standpoint than forced-induction motors??? And how much tq is compatible vs this MCT box??

More questions than answers, but am definitely intrigued by SL63 030 and SL Blk....I like the direction in which AMG seems to be heading....

Thanks for the link to this excellent article, Chris. Unlike WSH, I am pretty impressed with what BMW has done in the past 20 years in the auto industry. My last five BMWs ('95 M3, '00Z8, '04 745iSport, '05 MiniCooperS Cabrio & '07 650i Vert) have been excellent vehicles. All, except for the Z8, where also excellent value for your money and the emphasis was always sport & handling over luxury and air-suspension. Furthermore, if it wasn't for the pressure Mercedes felt coming from BMW, they would have probably never purchased Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach and today Mercedes wouldn't be making as many cars with the 'sport edge' that AMG provides the brand. But there is something else that is going on in Germany that is also worth mentioning in this context. Nobody expected Porsche to be as dynamic & profitable as it has turned out to be. The latter has now expanded their control to VW/Audi/Bentley and are about to introduce the Panamera which will directly compete in the four door 'super' sedan class once the exclusive domain of Mercedes and BMW. So it doesn't surprise me that the STAR and the ROUNDEL would collaborate more closely now to lower costs and increase technological content as a way to compete with the superb technical skills & managerial know-how Porsche is now bringing to the table, especially with their larger share of the German auto manufacturing market.
