Startup Question

Anyone here with an S550 experience an extra long startup time?

The time where you press the button (or turn the key) to the time the engine is going....sometimes I find it takes an extra few seconds for the engine to "catch".

I have noticed this since day 1 but never gave it much thought.

Just thought I'd run it by you guys. You have always been very helpful.

Hhhmmm..... can't say I've run into this issue.

Of course, I've only had my car for about 4 1/2 days now and have driven it a grand total of 5 times

Are you talking about the time it takes from the moment the starter kicks in until the engine starts? Or, the time between when you hit the button and the starter kicks in?

I've noticed the time it takes from when the starter is engaged to engine running is pretty consistent. But, sometimes the split second or so delay between pressing the start button and the starter kicking in, can vary.

When I press the button, the chuga chuga chuga (the sound from the buttons is pressed till the engine is "fired up") seems like there are about 4 too many chugas....sometimes...

I understand when one gets a car like this, he wants to keep on driving 4 1/2 days without stopping and turning engine off too many times.

Really do not know but could it be that the crankshaft position sensor needs sometimes one or two more passes before it knows the correct timing? I wonder how many chugas correspond to one engine rev.

Have always thrown the Keyless Go button into owner's manual case upon deliv of any new MB (found that key would often fall out of my pocket while driving and end up in seat structure, esp in aggressive twisties driving)....

But, recently installed KG button to see if I was missing anything (and, as predicted, in first wkend drive, key fell out of my pocket and into seat structure)...but also noticed that engine start-up was slightly less elegant/purposeful (?1sec delay) while using KG, as opposed to twist of key....something about the ergonomics/tactile activation of KG seemed just a tad inferior to that of the key fob....

To credit of KG, the KG button looks better than the more industrial-look keyhole....

Needless to say, threw KG button back into glovebox after my few-day expt....

I think when you use the keyless go, it takes a split second longer because the car is going from off to start right away. It also needs to make sure you have the brake pedal depressed. So, you press the brake and hit the start button whereas normally, you put the key in, turn past accessory mode, then to on position, then ignition. That's just my reasoning behind it. hehe.

Can't you get into ACC by pressing the KG button without depressing the brakes?

I Think I know what you mean, but it might just be in your head? At least thats how I felt with my old S, I used to turn her on and let go of the key. From Point of Turn to point of Start, it took a second or two. Your car is too new to have any problems already. But then again........ it is a Mercedes.

Can you make a video just in case?

no no... i said from day 1.

Especially after driving it and then turning her off - getting back into the car again 5 minutes later, I would notice it. Sometimes wondering if it would actually start.

Mine seems normal and consistent. Can't say I find anything wrong with my car on this matter. In fact, mine starts very quickly with only one or two chugas everytime (one second probably elapses between when I hear the starter initiating and the car is fully running).

Yes you can. Without pressing the brake, the first time you press the starter button it goes into accessory mode (windows, radio, etc). The second button press puts the car into the On mode without starting the engine. All the check lights turn on, A/C turns on etc. Normally, I just press the brake and hit the start button.

That explains people referring to pressing the brake pedal. I don't have KG in my car, have only driven one but in practise I do press the brake pedal anyway also on my car. I did not realise this would serve a specific function on the KG car, thanks for explaining.
