I dropped my car off at Beverly Hills Mercedes to have them have a go at this. The service adviser said it's not possible and that if it is, it won't be covered under warranty. I told him that other people have had it done before. He's gonna look into it and let me know if they can do it. I just want it done at this point. I'll just pay if I have too.

Oh and I went there because it's close and convenient right now.

Not sure if this applies to the S-Class, but I have noticed that my W211 does this (and I also find it annoying), but you can press one of the arrows on the steering wheel as you are exiting the car and it silences it. The message remains, but the chime stops.

I now do it second nature when getting out of the car just to make it hush.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work on the W221. =( There's not way to shut it up.

The dealer can remove this chime for you also. I told my SA it was in a sub menu under the chimes menu and they found it easily and did it for me at no charge. I cannot tell you how much nicer it is without that stupid chime.

GREAT NEWS

Thanks to everyone here for the input. Got car back this a.m.
The verdict is....FIXED. Although they tried to program the IC, "programming failed. Attempt reprogram again. SDS froze. Was not able to program. Attempted to get control unitlog.SDS could not talk to IC to get log. REPLACED INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. All OK" In other words when they tried to reprogram, it blew so they replaced and now no chime. I feel like I have a new car. Very Happy. Even though the dealer was hesitant in the beginning they came through. BTW enjoyed the new C class a lot. I started to wonder if I needed an S. Well when I picked it up....YES I do need my S.

Excellent news. Isn't it nicer to have that damn chime gone somewhat?

Wow, congrats! Hope to get mine fixed soon too. It took them almost a week to get that done?

Is that the same bell that chimes for the seat belt reminder? See "please get rid of that annoying bell"

No different chime. It WAS for keyless go.
Just wear your seat belt. IF anything ever happens you'll be glad you did.
I wouldn't be here if I didn't have my seatbelt on when my
F355 decided to snap oversteer. No more midengine for me.
AND I ALWAYS WEAR SEATBELT.

I totally agree with you and I do wear the seatbelt, I asked that because the MB dealer here in Wilmington will not disable it if it is the same chime as the seat belt reminder due to liability. It sounds like it is but at a much lower volume, I will have to really listen to see if its the same or not. It would be nice if the car did not chime to remind me to take the key when exiting and to not forget the key when entering the car.

It is def a different chime. My dealer asked the same thing. The don't forget key chime is loud and never stops until you shut the door. If the door was open it was dinging....... to infinity. The seatbelt chime only dings lightly after you start to drive off until you fasten the belt.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been cursing that bell since about 4 days after purchasing the car. Have you ever left your lights on, not paying attention to the bell as you exited the car? I have a few times, even more reason to get rid of it.

Yes two times. The second time I had a dead battery. That was exactly what motivated me to find this forum. I knew there had to be info available on a fix as the dealer originally told me the ding was normal. I'm glad I found the forum because now I can talk cars whenever I want. I know freinds and family can only take so much of my car talk.

I just got my car back from Mercedes Beverly Hills. Just to confirm, they will not remove the chime. They said it's a safety issue. If it's a safety issue, I wonder why Mercedes got rid of it halfway into the 2007 model year? On to the next dealer it is, not sure where yet, but I'll go when I have some free time. Hopefully I'll have better luck there.

Just sent message with contact info. You could also call Newport MB or Laguna and speak to the Service manager and try to get a comitment for the fix before you drive down. I bought a car a few years back from Newport dealer and they are incredible on the sales side. The claim to be #1 in the country and I don't doubt. If the service side is as good as the sales you will get taken care of.

Fletcher Jones has nothing more than a bunch of pompous jack asses working there IMO. As for Laguna Niguel, they are amazing, even House of Imports (may be a bit closer for you ///MB, try Downtown LA motors, or WI Simonson)

vonbeeler, I think the Newport MB dealer you're referring to is Fletcher Jones. They are the ones who updated the COMAND, but with a software version that is 2 versions old. So, I still don't have the traffic and birds eye. On the same visit I asked them to do the IC update and they didn't know how. The reason I decided to try them was because our saleslady recently moved there from House of Imports and she's usually very helpful and willing to get our problems solved.

We purchased the car at House of Imports and have been servicing it there mostly. However, I asked the SA there to do the IC flash and they didn't know it was possible. I will probably try there again as he said he would look into it. Maybe with the extra information I have now, they will be able to figure it out.

IMO it should be a recall item for the early adapters.

I totally agree! I can't believe the last SA tried to tell me if was a safety issue, since there's basically NO way to lock yourself out of the car with Keyless go. I was just too fed up to argue at that point.
