Thx for the update...
Kudos to MB for finally putting 030 wheels and sport steering wheel on US-spec S65s for a more coherently perf-focused car....
Will be curious if they retain the codgerly burl walnut interior trim...or switch it to cf (or at least blk wood), like CL63 030/'09 CL65....

Not really on the topic but when I had a look at the new mbusa website I found the passenger capacity being quoted to 6 for the S-class. How does it work in the US when the car only has seatbelts for 5?

My 08 has all packages and options. If I spec my car the same way for a 09, the 09 is slightly cheaper. Have to look at my window sticker at home for the exact amount, but there is a price cut somewhere in the options. Maybe P2 & P3 do not incorporate the price of P1 as it is standard?
MY09 MSRP for S550= 86.950. P1 and wood/leather wheel are standard. Also, the rear view camera is now in P2 instead of P3. Other than this, the equipment appears to be the same. S550 4M=89.950, S600=144.450, S63=128.350 and S65=194.950.
MY09 S550 Gas Guzzler Tax decreased by $300
Another interesting note, GGT decreased on the S550 2WD from 1300 to 1000. This changes the price increase of $250 from MY08 to MY09 to a slight decrease. All other model were unchaged.
What's even more interesting is that the degradation of the dollar vs the euro appears to be non-existent in the US pricing. Maybe the European, Asian etc., markets are subsidizing us in this venue, also?
You bring up an interesting topic, MBZ. I suspect that the prices of Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford, Chrysler are stable because their vehicles are produced stateside. Similarly, Japan assembled brands such as Lexus (Toyota subsidiary) are stable becaue the Yen has not appreciated much vs. the dollar. The stable prices from these manufacturers in turn prevent foreign manufacturers from being able to markedly increase their own prices for competitive reasons; very few people would purchase an S550 for $140,000 when an LS460 can be had for $65,000. Fewer still would purchase a base BMW3 for $85,000 when an Acura or IS350 can be had for $40,000. And so on.
The Europeans must choose between selling virtually no vehicles at a high price or selling normal numbers of vehicles at low prices. They have wisely chosen the latter.
