Woofers in a s550?

I am thinking about puting woofers in the trunk of my s550 but one of my friends said it wouldn't sound good because there is a metal plate in the back seat. Is this true?
Had anyone tried puting woofers in your s550? How does it sound?

One thing you may want to consider is the fact that there are many computers and electronics attached to the back seat that may be damaged due to the vibrations. I don't know how much they could take.

Isn't the gas tank behind the rear seat?

Yep. Not a good idea to mount speakers to the gas tank.

I would recommend contacting any reputable shops on this matter. I have seen plenty of S-Class with audio/video in trunk...

If it were me, I just wouldn't do it. The sound system is good enough on its own merit and the risk of damage is too great. Just my opinion.

Do you mean the electronics is in the bottom of the rear seat, or is it against the back of the rear seat?

The harmon kardon sound system sounds good but not enough bass for me. I was thinking of putting 2 jl 10w7.

Where did you figure this? The W221 isn't the same as a W220, W221 has a fuel tank more like on a W211. I could not find a good photo for the moment.

If the car had a ski-bag or a fridge, you would actually have an opening (with two doors) from the cabin to the trunk at the middle of the rear seat backrest (behind the armrest).

Just an education guess considering both the W220 and W140 had them behind the back seat.

I went to Germany and watched them build a W221 and I was shocked at how many computer boards and components are attached to the back of the rear seat. Someone , I can't remember who, had photos posted of some of the internal guts of our cars. Computers are all over the place. I thought it was AsianML that posted this....I may be totally wrong.

It wasn't me. I know who you're talking about though that posted them. I believe it was the member that posted various pictures of the designo interiors as well. If you search for designo interior pictures you might come across that member and do a thread search under his profile.

Yep, you're right. I do remember it was associated with the designo interior thread. Sorry about that.

I don't watch much TV but my wife is addicted to all of those type of shows including the one you just mentioned. TV is boring to me for the most part. I can't sit still

Diesel is right. There are some modifications from a car without the ski bag or refrigerator to the one with the access hole. They are actually pretty significant mods. The black metal brace/frame has to be changed which requires removal of the back seat. It took me the better part of a weekend to put in the refrigerator.

Johnny-

I've seen many many many S-Class vehicles with a multitude of different subwoofer placements/installations and options. It's just up to you to find the place that makes you COMFORTABLE with taking apart your car and putting it back together.

Some installers do a fantastic job of wiring/labeling/installing the components and hiding them and some botch the trunk up. It can be ultra-clean (meaning you won't even see the woofers or notice that much of the trunk was touched) or elaborate (meaning lights/mirrors/floating amps/subs all over the place).

Pick the right place and you WILL NOT be let down. I wasn't.

I'm not woried about noticing the subs and amp because i was planing to get 2 jl 10w7 with a sub box taking up 40 percent of the trunk. I'm just woried about all the vibration's would damage the electronics and computers and was told woofer's in a benz wouldn't sound good.

I feel that the S550 HK system is really bad. Are there any shops in Bay Area / Northern California that can make the audio sound right ?

What is your source for Music (iPod/MP3, Satellite, Radio, CD?). CD's sound great in the S550, everything else leaves alot to be desired...
