The Smart car is made by Penske and has a Mitsubishi motor in it if I'm not mistaken. Mercedes simply has rights to sell it. I'm not much of a fan of it as it doesn't get quite as good of mileage as it should considering its hype and size. My 84 Rabbit diesel got 63 mpg , and just today, my mother in law's Honda CRX got 44mpg on a 220 mile trip home , both of which are 1980 technology. The Smart is cute I guess but not practical for most people and certainly isn't safe but I can't say anything about safety since I drive a Honda Goldwing on my time off. BTW, I parked my Goldwing next to a Smart car and it is only 4 inches shorter.. All I know is, they are selling like hot cakes and my dealership just opened up its showroom floor where at all times 20 or so are sitting there already pre-sold.
Overall, I feel the tendency for these cars to sell will always be around as you certainly can't make a mistake buying a high mpg vehicle no matter what the economic/fuel climate is.

Great pix and you've done well with the mods, thanks for posting.

The smart is not made by penske... The smart is made by Mercedes-Benz in a factory in France.

United Auto Group’s Roger Penske is the one that sells them here in the US because it was easier to use his already established dealer netowrk, instead of establishing a new one.

The engine is a mistubushi engine, but syaing they are not safe is also wrong. They have been rated very well by the NHTSA, and they have been crashed tested to Mercedes standards.

Awesome cars... how much did the Brabus upgrades cost and where did you go to get them done?

Smarts are safe when colliding with other cars, which have crumple zones. The Smart is engineered to take advantage of the other vehicle's crumple zones. I would be very worried if a Smart collides with an immovable object (or another Smart), as it would mean serious trouble.

Trumpet is right, this car does not get nearly the mileage it's size suggests. Though there is a diesel version of the car, which can get up to 85 mpg. I guess waiting for a diesotto type engine would make this car perform economically according to its hype. I would not see a sense of owning one unless habitually commuting and parking in urban areas.

All new Smarts only come in the petrol engines and they no longer have the diesel available
