Didn't previous models do that, wipe the screen once at start-up if auto selection was on (I tend to remember the W210 did)? But that does not happen on the W221. And this topic was about wipers turning on at a left turn, on their own. The W220 at start-up is a different story.
sorry to revive an old thread but my 08 CL550 also has this problem in "auto" mode..
is there an update to any tsb or fix for this problem?
if there was remaining moisture/ raid wouldnt it happen on right turns as well?
thanks for any assistance!

Rare accidental activation of the rain sensing wiper system is normal. The ir receiver can be tricked by certain ambient light conditions, bugs, mist from windshield wash of the car in front oor side of you, etc.

Mine does the same thing except it won't shut off til I shut it off manually and it will wipe slow then on high like all hell. Could be paranormal I'm not sure.

Could it be condensation on the windshield glass inside the rain sensor that moves across the sensor lens area when car turns left?

I just tested it on my 2007 S600. And sure enough, when I made a left turn (south to east at 11 am); the car wiped just once. Totally dry day. Blue sky, not a cloud.
its in the handbook
its as per post years back here say - its strange refraction catches it out occasionally - like the handbook says do not leave auto wipe enabled in the dry - inadvertent wipe may scratch the screen -
mine does it - I guess in oz and south africa they get it when turning right sometimes
as for repeated movements by the guy that dragged up this old thread... something is wrong...

it is a feature of how Merc do rain sensing
the optical prism thingy gets affected by the refraction of sun light when its hits the sensor in specific ways - read the manual - it says all this - and to turn it off when its not raining
