Well after 14 months of ownership I had my first problem with my 08 S550 yesterday. Started the car after voting and the dreaded "Engine Malfunction" light stayed on. Nothing detectable with regard to performance, but the light stayed on all day.

When I started the car this morning the light was out. Stopped at my dealer without an appointment on my way to work and they took the car right in. Turns out it was an exhaust CAM solenoid which they replaced under warranty. Had me on my way in an hour and a half. All and all I can't complain. This is the one and only problem I have had and it was taken care of promptly.

In speaking with the shop foreman, I sensed that I was not the first to have this problem. So if any of you experience the same, suggest you make a trip to the dealer.

Happens to all the 272/273 motors. There is a campaign out for this issue.

Its a problem with the magnate that senses the position of the cam adjustments.

They should replace all 4 but the factory has gone el cheapo and will only change one per check engine light. Even with more than one registering an error they ask the tech to change one, reset the codes, and then send the car on its way hoping the other just gets itself back in order.

Design has been changed so hopefully you wont be back in again with the same issue.

I'll have to admit I have never heard of such an animal as a cam solenoid. This is totally new to me.

Does the S63 AMG have a 272/273 motor? I need to know if I should take mine in

Do you have a check engine light on? if not there's no reason to take it in.

An important off topic question for clarification: from your signature I can count how many wives you have but I've never heard of a schizophrenic with so many different personalities.

Kidding of course, just jealous.

same issue.
I just went through this with my GL550 (same motor as you mentioned). I guess I got lucky, as the dealer replaced all of the sensors on mine. It must be an easy task to repair, as I got the vehicle back within hours of dropping it off.
