Another question on 2008 telematic update

Sorry guys I know this topic has been beaten to death already but I just had to ask this......
Got my 2008 telematics update done which gives me video option and also traffic option. So today I'm sitting on the freeway in the middle of a big traffic pile-up (I'm talking about fatalities, roll-overs, news choppers overhead, and complete freeway closure), thought to myself hey why not test the traffic option and guidance to see if this thing really works....guess what, no matter what I try to do it just tells me no message or info. The freeway closure started at 6am and I was in the backup at about 8:30am which means most if not all traffic info stations already had the route marked off.
So what gives?
Oh, btw I didnt do the software/2008 dvd update so I'm still running the original map info that the car came with MY2007. I do have the birds-eye view so I would guess that the traffic alert info is independent of the software, no?

What part of the country are you located? See http://www.navteq.com/rdstraffic for the coverage areas. I have a 2007 S550 and the live traffic update works great, but I am in Nothern California.

I'm in the los angeles area which should be included in the coverage area....is this a free service or do I need to subscribe?

It's a free service, there is no subscription fee. RDS data is how the Traffic info is broadcast, see..

Everything works normally. except no traffic data which makes me wonder if I need to "activate" something in the command that would allow this function to start working

I had the same issue until I updated the map version from 2.1 (original version that came with the vehicle) to I believe 7.2 (maybe even newer) which is on the most current Navteq disc. I know a few members have rented their disc out, this maybe the way to go unless you want to spend $200.00 for a new disc. I rented the disc for $30.00, great deal in my opinion.

A good point, the OP did mention the old map data but I did not notice it before your post. The navi database needs additional info before it can make use of the traffic info. In Europe the traffic info is also encrypted in several countries, most often the licence comes with the map data, paid by the navi supplier.

This case should get solved from a navi DVD update as you say.
