Don't tell me it's snowing outside....
Seriously, winter tires, Pirelli SotoZero in my case, will do the trick with ease. My CL600 with much more torque than 63 had no problem in snowy Pennsylvania last winter.
So don't worry about it, get the car.

yea eh, ok well 2008/2009 S 63 with deep discount, or 2010 S 550? . Need a car that can rip it up in Canadian winter and not get stuck heh.

Downsizing the wheels to 19" and dedicated snows - no problem for 2 seasons so far

Seems like proper winter perf tires have made AWD essentially irrelevant in 99+% of winter driving

Tire tech (both summer and winter perf tires) has advanced considerably over past 3-4 yrs

And in any driving would prefer more powerful brakes, ABC, ESP calibration of a 63/65/600 over any 4Matic and/or all-season tires

Like I stated before, 4Matic is for wifes (mine included).

A false safety net.

A deception.

Everybody with 4Matic - relax
I'm joking, of course it helps in daily winter driving

After driving S classes in the Great White North for 10 years, I can tell you this...
If you had a 4 matic with 4 snows, then you can rip up a hill from a dead stop in a foot of snow.
With my S 600 and 4 Pirelli Soto Zeros, it will not go up my hill from a dead stop. Either I have to hit the ESP button to let the tires spin, or wait for the car to slowly creep up the hill.
If you are in an area where they plow regularly, you will have no problem...

I wish I could tell you but my S63 has never seen anything even remotely resembling snow.

But what I can tell you is when I owned a 750iL and drove it in Boston a few times it wasn't very good going up a hill even with decent momentum. Pulling out of a level driveway in 8-12" of snow was an absolute pain!

I guess the 4 matic works based on what some here like nitromilt say.

What's your appetite for close calls? Seriously, in hilly suburban/rural western PA, on stock wheels/tires, its a no-go. I always have an SUV (M or X5) at the ready. Never tried snow tires, though.

Dedicated snow tires help a RWD a tremendous amount in the snow, but nothing can replace AWD or 4X4

Absolutely ! With my W220 4-matic and good winter tires I can make it thru anything on swiss alpine roads. No need for an SUV.

You'll definitely want snow tires for that beast of a car and the size of the tires. Anything bigger than 16" and you'll want snow tires, if you were on 16" or less you could get away with stock all seasons and 4matic for the first year but with the size and weight of an s-class, you'll be fine with a good set as mentioned above.

I'm afraid one would have big trouble with 16" and smaller wheels. Pretty hard to carry four wheels and push the car without wheels (16" wheels don't fit on a W221).

Seriously, I know what you mean and agree mostly, but I would still have proper winter tyres even on a car with small wheels.

Absolutely. That's what I meant to say but didn't say in so many words. Due to the size of the S, I wouldn't go with anything but a great set of winters.

IMO I'd rather have an AWD vehicle with All-Season tires on it than a RWD vehicle with dedicated snows.
