Tire Recomendation

Getting close to time to put new tires on my 07 S550. AMG package so staggered front/rears.

Looking for advice on tires. Rarely drive the car hard - I have a different toy for that - so am more interested in ride comfort/noise/treadlife than performance characteristics. In Houston so cold weather considerations are not a factor.

Currently on PZero Rosso's from the previous owner.

Thanks

TireRack.com is a good source for you to start.

While I appreciate the feedback, and will almost certainly buy from them, I was hoping for some more empirical data from the crowd here.

I didn't recommend that you purchase from TireRack but do your research using their extensive website. They list OEM and other tires for your car, their own tests results and owner reviews (which is what you might be looking for).

They are a good resource but I have never purchased from them, too much hassle with shipping, etc.

absolutely NOT the PZEROS (on anything) unless you are only interested in performance.

The original continentals suck. I have Falken FK452's on 19in staggered as well (255 front 275 back). They are considered "value" tires but I find that they performance well in terms of handling and comfort for daily driving. Most important thing is to look at for UTQG ratings as some tires will wear extremely quickly ... like the PZEROS.

If you want to pay a little more to get more mileage from the tires others to consider are the Continental ExtremeContact DWS, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (probably better comfort).

Personally I'm 100% getting the Michelin's when these Falkens go out. They are about 1300 total and should last well past 45k if you drive normally. They are cheaper than the PZEROS and are still Z rated.

I've been using Michelin PS2's. Great tires, low noise, comfortable, but thread life might be a little low compared to others.

Im riding 255/30/21 in the front and 285/30/21 in the back.

I have a staggered set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS on my S55 and they are excellent all-weather tires. I cannot recommend them highly enough (for non-high-performance use). There is a DW version (S = Snow) so might be more fitting for Houston.

I read that the Conti DWS tire letters "D" "W" "S" specifically wear off the tire as wears in general. So if you purchased a set in April, ran them all summer, is it probable that the "S" would be worn off in December, in time for the snow? Am I missing something here?

Thanks folks - its a lot more helpful to hear what you have to say than the online reviews at the tire sites - I'm not particularly interested in the experience of a guy with the tires on his Camaro

you are missing something here. Two things.

1) It is *possible*, not *probable*
2) These tires are not "drive it like you stole it" tires, and will "probably" () not get shredded in a few months.

The DWS are "Consumer friendly indicators alert drivers to tire's performance level in Dry, Wet, and Snow conditions."

I still have all three letters

I bought mine in November 09 and at the rate they are wearing I expect to get two winters out of them.

I'm hoping for two full years, which would be fantastic (and 30K miles).

If I can get that kind of durability with my 55K motor, an S550 should be able to match or better it. Unless he's going to drive like more of an @ss than I occassionally do.
