Traffic was working, not anymore
I think I did everything right. I've got a 2007 s550 and was looking to upgrade to get traffic. So I had COMAND updated in June (w/Birdseye view), everything worked great except traffic. Then, I updated the NAV with the latest (rented) NAVTEQ DVD in August and the traffic worked for a day, then it stopped. So, I did the upgrade once again, this time it worked for about 10 days, I did notice it wasn't giving me the DC traffic, when I was in DC, but I was getting the Baltimore area traffic, which is where I spend most of my time. Then it stopped once again. I'm stumped. Anyone else have similar problems? I'm thinking its not locking on the FM signal to get the update, but don't know of anyway to force a reset, other than rent the DVD again for the update. Any and all advice is appreciated.

I was under the impression that the traffic was RDS based, not satellite based. When I last spoke with Sirius, they asked me for a traffic receiver ESN, whereas I only have one ESN.

My 2010 traffic has its own ESN number and requires a separate subscription to Sirius to work.
I've read on this forum that older cars' traffic just works on existing (free) RDS.

Sirius traffic is only used by 2010 and newer models.
2007, 2008, and 2009 models get traffic information via RDS which is broadcast by FM radio stations. No subscription is required for this. It is not available in all areas. There have been occasional time periods when no traffic is available.
It also may take several minutes for traffic information to appear. This depends on how often it is broadcast in your area.

Free? Mine worked free for 5 or 6 months and disappeared. I called Sirius who asked me for a separate esn from the radio. They then signed me up for traffic with a fee and traffic was back on in minutes.

2010 is the first year that the S550 uses Sirius. Older model cars are free through RDS.
I too have not had any success in getting the RTT to work more than a day a week. For no reason it works for one trip (not even the whole day) then stops for a week or two. And this is for metro NY...

Mercedes will not help you since this was not a feature offered on 2007 vehicles.
The fact that it works for a lot of us is undocumented and most dealers will firmly state that it can't work on 2007 or early 2008 vehicles.
In order for it to work in a 2007 or early 2008 vehicle, you need to have the Telematics upgrade installed by a dealer. In the past, most refused to do this.
Once this is done, you need to load one of the more recent map DVDs. Versions 5 and newer will work for this.

It is free only for vehicles that use RDS (prior to 2010 models). 2010 vehicles use Sirius and require a paid subscription

Unfortunately you will find little published information about this.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone with a 2007 S550 have the Sirius traffic subscription with working traffic. I figured without the traffic ESN, the traffic wouldn't work anyway.
Dan (RTX2008), when you signed up with Sirius, did you give them a separate traffic ESN?
Id be willing to pay for the consistency of getting traffic regularly.

Was the RDS traffic information shown on the navigation screens (as upcoming traffic issues) or was it just something you had to go to a separate channel to hear traffic issues? I have a 2009 CLS550 and I haven't seen any traffic info on the nav unit when driving. Any help on this?

I guess you may be right because the CLS550 manual doesn't say anything about traffic stuff with the GPS...now i'm pissed! Otherwise I would have to spend a ton of money switching out the navi unit for a 2010 to get sirius traffic.
