Hi,

I got an 07 S550 with 53,000 miles and I have some service questions.

I am doing it all my self so...

After looking over the booklet it seems that I have to do these things (some might should have been done a while ago, but I just bought the car and there are no records so I am going to do them now to be sure):

Replace Brake Fluid - how do I do this? Is it really necessary every two years or at all?

Replace Transmission oil and filter - where is the filter, drain and filler and again is this really necessary?

Air cleaner - how do I do it?

Combination filter - where is it, also I had a w220 before and I remeber there being a charcoal filter, combin and I think dust(?), I guess the 221 just has one?

Lastly, I keeps telling me that service c has been exceeded by what ever amount days, and first what is service c, because in the book they are all sorted by numbers and also how do I reset this? I know how to get into the Asysst Plus menu, but once i'm in the Service due part everything is confusing, there is nothing there that says reset.

Sorry to plop all those questions on you, if someone could point me to some tutorials or just answer what they know.

Otherwise, everything seems like a joke like "Check condition of seat buckles."

I don't think you'll be able to do the trans fluid.From what I was told,the job takes hours and required special tools. The rest,its possible to do yourself.

I just had service D done on my car at the dealer. They said go by the indicated milage in the service maintenance booklet instead of the letters.

I cut and pasted from one of my recent posts on the same subject:

Air filters are easy. Unclip the engine cover from the rear and pull up on it. It will require a little force to unplug the retainers. Slide it back towards the windshield to unhook the air tubes. On a bench flip it over and use a torx bit (can't remember size 20 maybe 25) to undo each filter cover. R&R filter and clean all the crap that is in there. When you are done reinstall in reverse. when you have it in place a solid open handed hit in each corner should lock it down then re-clip the rear. Should take 10 minutes all in.

Cabin filters- Under passenger side dash remove black panel (same torx bit if I'm not mistaken). The airbox is under there behind the glovebox. I recommend moving the seat all the way back and down as you kinda need to get up under there to see. Also, put plastic or a garbage bag down on the floor as when you pull the filter crap will fall out. there are two black sliding clips that hold the cover on. They slide side to side, unclip them and the cover should pull down. Look up in there- the filters will be at a 20* angle to each other. Pull them down, clean the crap and replace. follow steps to replace everything. Make notice when you replace the trim piece- there is a clip or two that need to be slid in place to hold it up in addition to the torx bit.

Oil change- Don't know. I buy the oil filter from MB and get a pack of Mobil one from Costco and $25 later (labor) my local guy does the rest. Frankly why you would want to jack up the car, drain the oil, pull and replace the filter and dispose of the oil for 25 bucks is beyond me. Not trying to be a pain, just that the $25 (or whatever labor will cost you) is the cheapest labor you can buy when compared to what it will take to do the job (and a messy job it is!).

Can't help you on the brake or tranny. Usually the brake fluid is done by bleeding it at the four corners, but I don't know the steps on this car...

I have the same car and similar mileage that I got recently (although I've had mercedes for many years (C, E, ML, S).
My advice is to get a good, non-dealer, mercedes mechanic. Little slip-ups in maintence can be costly. My mechanic got more than half of his major repair work last year from botched oil and fluid changes. One major overhaul from low quality oil used over several years, despite the written records (Jiffy Lube) that high quality synthetic was used... Regular service by a mechanic can alert you to problems croping up. My mechanic will give me a list of items that "can be skipped for now", "do next time" or "must do". He has the mercedes computer diagnostic tools to re set service lights, etc. And, he is much cheaper then the dealer... Dont get me wrong, I've also had some bad service people and I DO visit the dealer for warranty and other items, but I think with this car where so much can go wrong, it is too much of a risk to be penny wise and pound foolish... Not to mention its nice to have someone to blame if there is a mishap!!

Although I live north of Boston, I work downtown everyday. I can drive in my car to his shop and walk or Taxi back to my office, then pick up the car and go home after work. Works great for me and I'm not taking a day off or eating into my weekend dropping off cars. I dont think he has loaners, though so multi day fixes might require a ride from a friend...

any ideas on what I should do to go about fixing this?

I found the filters on the internet via Amazon. Honest to goodness, both for 31 usd's, including shipping. Easy install. Very practical. German made charcoal replacements. Exact fitment. Google 'em.

Headlight moisture? Sorry, cannot help.

Headlight moisture.... sounds like the unit might have a crack somewhere that is letting water in? Not quite sure how to remove headlight to check...

Got the cabin combination filters out, my only issue is on the bottom of each filter, there are little arrows pointing in a certain direction saying air flow. I don't know which way the air flow is coming from, so I don't know which way to put it in, could some describe the proper way?

I dont think it matters all that much, it's just a charcoal filter....

sorry for bringing back an old thread but i used the search button and read this thread but did not find anything..i dont think i overlooked it but if anyone can chime in that would be greatly appreciated..

i have an 07 and i was wondering is there any way to reset the service lights when they come up? im starting to change the oil myself and would like to reset the lights

There is a tutorial on how to do it, its quite easy. Don't know it off the top of my head and I'm on my phone but if you type in on google 'reseting s550 service light' or something along those lines, there is a video on youtube. Also I'm pretty sure there is a pinned thread on the top of the w221 category that has instruction, or that could be Benzworld. Its a nice change from the w220 where you couldn't reset it yourself.
