Which S-class generation didn't drive very well?
As far as I know, the W140 was the first S-class with the Adaptive Damping System(ADS). ADS continued with the W220 and then the W221 had Active Body Control(ABC).
The only S-class generations I had were the W220 and W221 and both handle really well.
Since the S-class is the flagship car, it really has to be good in major aspects including handling.
Which S-class generation didn't drive so well? Was there even a time when an S-class didn't handle well?

That's a very peculiar question. I bet all S-Classes drive very well. I have tried W126, W140, W221 and all were excellent and Mercedes-like :-)

From the W116 450SEL through to the W221 S65, they all handled extremely well for each age they were rolled off the factory floors.
We still have our 1973 W116 280S - AUTOMATIC, the car is still immaculate, but never the less with 14" steel rims and stainless chromed wheel covers, she handles superbly.
Has original Bilstien shocks and Mercedes Benz stamped springs/coils.
Handling an S-Class has always been a pleasure for me, I grew up in them.

Several MB's Superperformance MK III Cobra
I have owned a 116, 126, 220 and now a 221. They all drove wonderfully in their times and the older of the 4 were hallmarks in their time. I skipped the 140 because I began to wonder if MB was getting away from what made them great.
