iPod / iPhone integration software question

iPod / iPhone integration software question
One of my friends has a 2010 C-class and when I plug my phone into the kit in the glovebox, we can select tons of options via the command unit. We can change playlists, artists, songs, whatever... In the S though, we can't find this option and I find it really hard to believe that the software would be so much worse in the S than it is in the C. I have the most recent telematics update but I was wondering if maybe there were other software updates that were maybe made that would enable the audio navigation to be similar to what it is in the C? As it stands now, it sucks playing it that way because I have no control over it.

The S-class doesn't provide the best possible options by default. In fact the S-class at times did not have any iPod interface option at all. Can you imagine, some time ago the S-class hardly had any electronic devices at all. 
The 2010 C-class has an updated head unit, the current S-class has an updated unit too. Once cannot expect an update to an old head unit to bring the hardware to the level of the new unit. Certain features could be upgraded with SW updates but MB generally does not do that (for several reasons, not only to promote new car sales).

So the actual head unit is different in the 2010's not just the software? Even if it was software related I supposed MB wouldn't be too quick to retrofit older cars. Guess I've been spoiled with my iPhone where I constantly get new updates when new features come out and would ideally expect them on the car too!
That and no one touch close on the pano are both rather annoying but the rest of the car makes up for it I suppose.
