With my Bluetec you just adjust the main volume knob (don't know if the wheel control works) *as* the navigation lady is speaking.I'll wager that the same is true with your car.

Yep, I second that. I have only been able to adjust her volume only when she's in the act of speaking otherwise I'm just adjusting the music volume. I also just do it with the volume scroll wheel thingy on the right side of the console/center knob.

I was similarly stumped with the volume on my 04 XJ8. I discovered that the volume control on the steering wheel controls both the sound system and the Nav. But you can only control the Nav when the voice is actually speaking (or trying to). If the volume is turned all the way down for the Nav, you might never figure out how to activate it. The easiest way to do it is to touch the small speaker icon in the lower right corner of the Nav screen. This gives you audio directions "on command". While this audio is playing (or trying to), simply adjust the volume on the steering wheel. If you try to adjust the volume at any other time, you are simply turning your sound system up or down. As I said, this is how it works on the XJ. It might be different on the S type. My wife has a 2000 S but no Nav system.

I wonder if you understood the suggestions right. You have to adjust audio volume while the navigation announcement is spoken. Perhaps you did not have any previous announcement or you were too slow but obviously you were not tuning the navi volume if the music level got raised.
Try to make the navigation talk long and then press the repeat button and immediately when she starts talking, tune volume. I've never heard of a car that would have an issue with this feature (I mean being somehow broken).

It's really a simple process...so easy that even *I* can do it!
