Perhaps you don't have the VCM. I believe early US cars did not have the phone kit, neither the VCM even if it was a standard feature. These were supposed to be retrofitted but not all cars got them.

if I hold down that button nothing happens, I just got the '07 two weeks ago and have been finding many things some things have been stripped out and resold (the puck, satellite receiver, and now this VCM) but Im not sure its even in there.

most likely your model did not have the VCM installed. Mine was the same way. I have yet to have one installed...like the previous person said, earlier 07's did not come with it installed. My independant mechanic said that it can be retrofitted now but not sure the price point.

Do you have the appropriate option-code for Linguatronic( I think for US-English it is code 396..??) on your datacard, if not : sorry no voice-control from the factory .
(The steering wheel may have been replaced)
You can get your datacard(optioncodes etc.) derived from your VIN.
To relieve your anger and pain:
As you may know European cars especially MB and BMW, but also some other EU brands were known for not having too many standard options.
Where-as the top-end W221(especially the S550 US) are already a bit better equipped.But you can still spend a nice A-class to get all the options.
For me the reason at the time(80's-90's) to get an American car as they where much more luxurious ,then the ones from here in the EU(power windows,power-steering aircon)we did not have as standard at all.
Now EU manufacturers have to compete with US an Japanese producers and do have al lot of these standard options from the factory as well.
I can understand your rage and not so sure wether the W221 S550 US comes with standard linguatronic.
