Transmission....Again

2007 4matic 117,*** off line. Just turned 75,000 miles.

I have read scary stories on being stranded, $7,500 "rebuilt" trans. replacements etc.

I just experienced the issue of the trans. simply going dead. I levered to D and R and back. After messing for sometime, it shifted to "limp". It was near midnight and I trudged to my home via side streets. Parked at home.

Next morning started car and all was cool.

Is this the valve body circuit board that handles engine rpm going south?

Is it potentially the whole trans/torque set-up?

Like a toothache that comes and goes away, I am scared it'll come back again soon.

Should I preempt and get valve body thing fixed or roll the dice it was a one time thing? I have subsequently drive three days w/ no problems, except "distinct" down shifting (temp is in 20's).

Very skeptical and have no confidence I won't be stranded again soon.

Advice?

Thanks.

Merry Christmas to all.

Trans

Hi
According to merc the gearbox oil and filters need changing once and that's at 40,000 miles, I would check and see if this has been done

There would probably be codes stored if this erronous behaviour of the transmission has taken place;could have a check with Star ?

The transmission event, where it would not go forwards or backwards and then went to "limp" happened 11 days ago. Stopping the engine and then restarting allowed the car to shift properly. There was no indication on the panel nor did the check engine light come on. This baffled the MB SA.

Last night, out of the blue, the check engine light came on, but there were no transmission issues, as far as shifting etc.

Is the light related to a still festering transmission problem or could it be something totally different?

Is there any way, by going through a menu from the steering wheel, to find out what the check engine light is responding to?

Is it still okay to drive, with the check engine light on?

Thanks.

Below are from owner's manual. I think car is not safe to drive regularly as you may get stuck in the middle of the road. But you should be ok to drive to dealer if not too far away and shifting is still working. Good luck.

Problem Possible cause/consequence Suggested solution

The yellow engine malfunction
indicator lamp comes
on while driving.
There is a malfunction in:

The fuel management system

The ignition system

The emission control system

Systems which affect emissions
Such malfunctions may result in excessive
emissions values and may switch the engine
to its limp-home (emergency operation)
mode.

Have the vehicle checked as soon as
possible by an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.

Problem Possible cause/consequence Suggested solution

The yellow engine malfunction
indicator lamp comes
on while driving.
A loss of pressure has been detected in the
fuel system. The fuel cap may not be closed
properly or the fuel system may be leaky.

Check the fuel cap.
If it is not closed properly:

Close the fuel cap.
If it is closed properly:

Have the fuel system checked by an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.
Your fuel tank is empty.

After refueling, start, turn off, and restart
the engine three or four times in
succession.
The limp-home mode is canceled. You do
not need to have your vehicle checked.

Thank you for caring enough to share the info. I will be going to the MB dealership for diagnosis, after filling with fuel and checking the fuel tank cover, to see if the symbol goes away.

I have the same problem for about 8 months. My S550 won't get in gear sometimes or when it slow down then won't shift in the right gear so car shut off.

I got my new conductor plate in transmission replaced. Also they reprogram the computer with new update software.

It was normally $1800-$2000 job. I ended up got good deal at the dealership, paid $1100 out the door.

I had the same problem on my 2007 S550. It's the valve body that needs to be changed. Mine was covered under warranty and happened around 30000 miles.
