Exclamation HELP!!! THE weirdest thing "fell off" my s550......anyone know replacement??????

I noticed this yerterday after driving from the city to the country.....like an hour away going 90 on average.....

Upon returning I noticed that the passenger side rear door had the chrome bar at the bottom on the door missing. I have no clue how this could have happend.....anyone know or has had similar experiences with this??? Or does anyone know where I can buy a replacement? I hate driving cars that have a bulb out or something missing.....

Can anyone help???????

That happened to me today!!! Closed my door when I got in the car and I heard something fall, look out and i see the chrome strip sitting on the floor!!!

The 2 clips are still attached and the sticky stuff is still attached to the door, I dont know how it would just fall off. Upon inspection, the rear driver side door strip was also very loose and a gentle tug made it fall off as well. I checked the passenger side and they seem to be sturdy.

Is it okay to just use some heavy duty adhesive and glue them back on??

yeah i dont know how mine happend, we were walking to the car after horse riding (no comment) and i notice the chrome was off... my girl said she didnt do anything nor slams the door which is BS..but who knows, i do push the car around 100-110 once in a while, maybe it happend then....anyways the adhesive leftover isnt easy to take off atleast not for me. i had to use a plastic tool and gently scrap under it.

the best part was calling MB for a quote,,,,,

they came back at $153 for the piece and $100 something for the install

LOL

I think I might leave the old adhesive there and just apply a thin layer of super glue or something on the back of the strip, and one the 2 contact points. Im sure that should be enough to keep them in place.

it might stick out more due to the depth of the existing adhesive strip + new strip

I tried using some weld-bond adhesive but that didnt do the trick, they are still loose. Guess I will go to home depot and find a stronger adhesive.

Same problem here. On e pice fell off, then another, then another. Luckily alway while parked. It's getting cold here in NJ so maybe the time and cold did the trick. MY 2007. Guess the tape life span is 6 years or so. I pulled all of the rest off easily so as not to loose the trim. Will have them reinstalled at the local body shop so they clean and prep well. Need to get the old tape off which is still on the body quite well.

I really like my W221. Much more than my previous W220 but I would have expected MB to use clips and not tape.

At least you still have yours. I would suggest using a clear adhesive (very sparingly) to insure that the remaining loose piece does not fall off also.

I use 3M foam Trim Tape for everything like this. If both surfaces are clean (using rubbing alcohol) What ever you stick on will never fall off.

I may as well add myself to the list. I was able to keep the rear one perfectly straight but the front one completely gone. My dealer (I live in South Florida) said the sun affects the adhesive. I was at costco and saw another S550 missing both too. I'm surprised this isn't covered under some manufacturer defect since I can tell you this is the only car I have ever owned that this happened to. I $74 to replace 2 of them from eBay sure sounds better then $135x2=$270 from the dealer, plus I bet they charge for installation. I'm not one to DIY so I may buy from ebay and see if the dealers body shop or another body shop will replace them. Or if anyone here in South Florida can refer me to a body shop feel free to PM me.

UPDATE: i replaced mine from the ebay one, the shine is a little off from the original, but its like scratches on your car. unless you point them out, no on else knows that you have them... anyways i had to use a screwdriver to scrape the adhesive off, then use a lightly damp cloth and wipe down the area. hold the piece tight once placing it onto the car. i used a TINY bit of super glue every few inches....havent fallen off since.
