Radar Detector

Need some advise on a radar detector for my s550. I have been using my Escort 8500 x50 mounted on the bottom center of the windshield where the gap is for the metallic windshield coating but it sure seems like the amount of notice I receive for an oncoming LEO has diminished greatly compared to my last car when I had the radar detector mounted high.

I know there are also two gaps to the left and right of the rear view mirror but unfortunately my Escort will not fit there ( the mirror is in the way ). I have been looking at either the SmartRadar unit from Escort which looks small enough to fit in this location or going with the 8500ci which is the permanently mounted external unit ( in the front grill I assume )

What have you found to be the best solution for radar detection in an s550 without distronic taking into consideration the metallic windshield coating ?

Thanks,

Nick

I have a Valentine mounted just above the Rear View mirror and on the left of center. It works very well. As for wiring, I tried every wire that exists above the mirror, all the switches etc.. Finally had to run a wire over to the left and down the piller and to the fuse box..

My car has the same type of windshield that you have (with the opening for radar/ garage openers) and I find that even when I put the garage opener right behind the gap, it's still hard for the signal to go through. So I don't think buying a smaller unit will help the problem, rather you have to think about somewhere else to mount the radar such as those kits where they go behind the grilles.

Platt,

Thanks. Any chance you could take a picture for me ? Does your car have distronic ?

Generic,

I think I am coming to the same realization, in which case the 8500ci would be a good solution ( plus I wouldn't have to hide the radar detector every time I park the car )

Thanks both,

Nick
