S430
2011, 12, or 13 S550

Where can I find the most reasonable prices on 2011, 2012, or 2013 S550s? Also, what are the major changes between the models? I currently have a 2003 S430 and I am ready for an upgrade.

If you're in Southern California, go to Fletcher Jones MB dealership in Newport Beach. They'll give you good rates on 2010s to 2012s CPOs. Brand new 2013s are still way to overpriced even if the 2014 W222 came out already. I just got a fully loaded 2012, S550 with low miles last week for $75K out the door. 2010s can be had for $45k to $55k.

I just traded an 04 S430 (my second W220) for a 2010 S550. The S550 is a very nice car, but I don't consider it an upgrade over a W220 per se. By that I mean that an upgrade would be a car that does everything the S430 does, just better. The W221 has different intentions and capabilities.

I think the W220 represents the last of the stately S Classes. There's a certain charm and elegance to the W220 that's not present in the 221. The 220 wants to pamper, coddle and insulate the occupants above all else. It's not a sporty car. While you could get an AMG appearance package and give the exterior a sporty pretense, the nature of the car didn't change.

I think that with the introduction of the Maybach handling the needs of the Grey Poupon crowd, Mercedes decided the 221 could lean more toward sportiness. The exhaust is louder, the ride is firmer, there's more road feel in the steering, the seats are more aggressively bolstered. In terms of a quiet, comfortable, serene driving experience, there is no direct upgrade to the W220.

Aesthetically, while the 221 is an attractive and more modern design, the 220 still holds up. I think an 04-06 S430 or S500 with the AMG package is a beautiful, timeless, classic design. I'm enjoying my S550 immensely and adjusting to the differences, but I do miss the 220s.
