Light appears when fuel level near 1/3 empty.
I am the new owner of a 2007 S 550 with 44k miles.
Over the last month I have noticed that the engine light comes on every time the fuel level reaches the 1/3 level. (4 times over the last 5 weeks) I have checked the fuel cap it's tight and the car seems to run fine. It goes off within 3-4 hours of refilling the tank.
I stopped by a pep boys to have them check for codes it came back clear. But by the time I got there the light was not illuminated. I have not had time to get to my mechanic yet but I figured I'd run it by this group first. I did a rudimentary search on this site but couldn't find any clues to why this is happening.

It's very unusual for the engine light to come on without the car displaying a corresponding fault message on the info screen (in the speedometer display), but my 2010 did the same thing last week over several days. Just when I was planning to take it in to have it checked it cleared by itself and I haven't seen it since.
The car isn't shy about complaining very specifically when it needs attention, so whatever it is it can't be serious.

I just had a similar issue with a 2010 S500.
The gauge would report 2/3rds 3/4qts even when full. The light was coming on at funny times.
I was expecting a new fuel level sender etc... But turned out to be just software.
The dealer reflashed the rear SAM, filled it to 100% and re calibrated fuel gauge. Working perfectly now.
