Like many others on this site, I did tons of research before purchasing my 2009 S550 with 60k and extended warranty. I got the car because I love the style and class plus I wanted something I could drive for a long time 200k if possible. What I'm reading now is the car won't last past 100k without dumping the price of another car into it. My question is can I get 150k - 200k out of this car with reasonable expenses or should I have purchased a 190e that I know will get me 300k? Just asking....

The question is- how diy are you? The engine and tranny when properly maintained will last a long long time. The 7g tranny will blow a valve body and an updated part is available. But aside from that pretty much all problems can be resolved with star/ DAS and some skills plus a good set of tools.

190 E. I had a late 80's 2.6. Much simpler car, very sturdy and to the point. Still expensive to repair if I recall. A distributor cap was $400 and a front strut was over $600.

Maintained according to schedule - fluids replaced with fluids of same rating but other than oem brands as other members have posted the names of the vendors for mercedes fluids on this forum - repairs with oem parts wholesale from online, combo of DIY and trusted non-MB shop, and you can maintain one of these for a lot less than dealer repaired/maintained cars. One thing that seems to be consistent with those who have run these cars from purchase or <25k miles to over 100kmiles is that they have access to a DAS/XENTRY terminal (and someone who knows how to use it) and the car is examined periodically multiple times between the scheduled services. That seems to catch things early before they really become a problem - preventative maintenance does seem to work, but like others on the forum have indicated in numerous threads, have either a warranty and/or cash on hand for repairs. I plan to DI-Myself repairs as much as I can. I also am in the middle of a retrofit and I am learning quite a bit about my car, seems it has a lot of capability (option ready) for retrofitting options that I want. Now if I could figure a way to get a lift past my darling wife into the garage and camo' it so she won't see it for a while, I would be set for brake jobs and other routine maintenance. also for just information purposes, I would advise that you subscribe/join multiple forums and the Euro forums too. One can get a ton of good info on early warning signs, existing symptoms, and other good info to help you with keeping your car in good shape. I hope this helps.
