SHTF mode?

For day-to-day driving, perhaps it is nice to keep all of the safety functions enabled. There may be life-or-death situations, though, where one must drive the car differently.

Under those circumstances, I'd want the collision intervention off, traction control off, lane assist off, and sport mode on. I may have to use the car to save my life or lives of loved ones, so I wouldn't want the car to automatically stop or moderate power. I may need to ram a vehicle or barrier. Although the best way to do that is using the rear of the vehicle, sometimes front is the only option.

I started looking at the manual and the "Programmable Button". It doesn't fit the bill. Is there a way to script a shortcut/function of some sort where I can easily disable these features?

Thanks.

Nope. Mercedes thinks that when it senses an impending accident, the correct course of action is to simultaneously:

Boost the anti lock brakes to maximum.
Close the sunroof to prevent ejections.
Reorient the front seats to be in optimal position relative to the air bags.
Power retract the seatbelts to remove slack

After an accident it will, if still capable, transmit an emergency call to MB and coordinate rescue via Embrace.

I've been in an S Class twice when Pre Safe engaged. The last time I looked down for a second doing 45 and when I looked back up I was closing very rapidly on stopped traffic. The nice, polite, easy going S Class you think you know...that ain't the S when it's trying to save your life.

The seatbelts yank you back with great force, pinning you into the seat. The sunroof and seats move at high speed, and the braking force and de acceleration is violent. Everything I had loose in the back seat of the car ended up on the dashboard pinned under the windshield.

But, in a situation where I was 100% certain I couldn't stop in time, I had about three feet to spare. Then, as quickly as it began, the old lazy S Class was back. I'm not aware of a human that would think fast enough to put all that in motion, button or not.

Thanks for the excellent description of all that happens. It is absolutely great in normal conditions. Based on your experience and observation, do you believe that pre-safe is too conservative in its activation?

Reading the manual, it looks like Pre Safe can be disabled, but it takes a few steps...

No, it's never come on in non threatening situations, including hard stops. It seems to be pretty smart. I'd leave it alone and hope you never need it.

Life or death? Needing to ram another car or barrier? It sounds like you plan on robbing a bank or something....and don't want all of the nannies to slow you down in a police chase.
