Comparing
I think I want a S-550. Have found a couple of pre-owned nearby that I'm ready to make a deal on. Before I pull the trigger, I'd like to know how this compares with BMW 7-series; Jaguar XJ; Audi A8; Lexus LS. I'm seriously considering either a 2009 or '10 S-class

S Class: More luxury, less road feel, less sportiness, softer handling, smoother and quieter, better grade interior materials, interior finished to a higher degree, as good or better tech (except for the lack of Bluetooth Audio.) Sound system may seem lacking unless it's the optional Bang & Olfsen. Seats are best in class. (This all does not apply to the Lexus, which manages to be cheaper looking as well as offering a squishy ride and isolated steering.)
An S Class either sells itself on the first test drive or it's not your cup of tea. Have you had a chance to take one out yet?

Depends on the weather
100% true. After driving it right out of the parking lot before even getting on the highway for the test drive, the first thing I said was "Oh, I definitely love this" and I was sold.

Yeah, same thing happened to me, when I test drove mt car, quiet, smooth, kinda quick and quiet, smooth, and kinda quick, and then quiet, smooth, kinda quick, and then, my wallet came out 7 days later, after test driving multiple S550s.

......But well put alx.
Between the ride and the super comfy seats......I prefer the S-class (and I'm a big BMW & Audi fan)
I think the 7-series has a bit to much Avant Garde styling.
The Drive of a Q8 reminded me of a VW Phateon.

I first looked at this car last Tuesday, then went out of town on business from Wed-Sat. Negotiated price with the salesman on Tuesday of this week, filled out a Credit App on Wednesday & drove the car home tonight

2011 Mercedes S63 AMG
Congrats. The Lexus LS460L/600HL are actually really nice and comfortable cars. The only reason I got out of it was it was lacking power and sportiness feel so I traded it for an S63. It felt like it's for an older gentleman.
The one I had was the executive package which came with everything you could think of. Shiatsu massager, fridge, rear entertainment etc. It was the smoothest ride I have ever felt.
