My feeling is that something really bad has or is about to happen to the car that will be very expensive to repair and has to be repaired properly and he is just trying to unload it as quickly as possible. A $3000 price drop indicates a desperate seller.

 

I am guessing he just wants to cut his losses. epitome of a cautionary tale.

 

It says in the ad that the transmission fluid was changed. Wonder if he did it himself like he was going to do, or went to the dealer

 

This thread should be stickied to the top of the page and when ever someone wanders over looking for pre-purchase advise they should be re-directed here. In fact the tittle of this thread should be "BUYING AN S CLASS START HERE!

I am kind of disappointed BENZ55 did not stick around to share with us the final out come of his project. This thread will never really truly end. Kind of like that other thread that the schmuck who also had an 07' started with his tranny problems. We never got closure with that poor ******* either. And when I say poor, I mean as in a broke *** ****. He had no money to fix his beloved Benz and yet he still remained closed on Mondays. Putz.

Both posters and their threads are hall of shame worthy losers.

 

I'm going to be charitable and say that MBS55 decided to take his family on vacation and had more important thing to do than post on a Mercedes online forum. The summer is gorgeous in the Pacific Northwest so I don't blame him if he's not checking in. That said, he probably realizes the long term cost of maintaining an S-Class competes with his family's desire to own a home. You are right about the cautionary tales. Whether it be jobs2ceo or mbs55 they should be must reads for anyone thinking of owning an S-Class. The sad thing with jobs2ceo's tranny issue is that it probably was just a conductor plate problem. It could've been fixed for a little under $1500. He probably sold the car at a huge loss to someone with the means to get the repair done and now that person is driving it for thousands more miles. In MBS55s case I don't consider himself a loser. He took a damaged W221 and made it look normal through his unconventional and unorthodoxed way. I don't consider persistent people losers. Crazy perhaps but not a loser.

 

This thread has come full circle, at least as far as BenzS55 is concerned. He said he could fix his car for under $1k with a rubber mallet and some used parts....and that he planned on "enjoying" the car for years to come. His behavior throughout the thread was strange at best, and dishonest at worst. I hate to label him with the "typical Russian immigrant" badge, but that seems to be the case. It turns out the we, the ones he labeled as the naysayers, were correct the entire time. He may have fixed his car for less than some of us were expecting, but the repairs were obviously done unconventionally and not up to the high standards of a good body shop. His current asking price, which is close to what he paid for the wrecked car and shipping, shows that he over-paid for it in the first place and got in over his head. Not surprising with the strange approach he took to the project.

One might assume that other issues have come up with the car where he is ready to dump the car for a $5k+ loss and his time. But he may also be eyeing another project that he sees as potentially profitable and needs the cash. Or maybe his wife is fed up with his goofiness with this car and just wants it out of her garage. Either way, it can hopefully be gleaned as a lesson learned for the OP and others considering the same kind of thing.

I hope BenzS55 gets close to his current $12k asking price and that the car is mechanically sound for the next buyer. I think that he should change the wording of his ad to be closer to my previous post (which I really don't think would hurt his ad by being more honest with less possible repercussions from a potential buyer....especially at that price point for a W221 car), and get rid of the "oil changes every 3k miles" part since he obviously has no clue as to the previous history of the car.

Maybe he couldn't swallow a $5k+ loss and decided to keep it. He hasn't been around in a while, so who the hell knows.

 

It's not right that this hump left the forum hanging. You know he is reading the thread.

 

Or maybe he's embarrassed and depressed about the state of his car due to possible mechanical issues beginning to rear their ugly heads. The guy is very goofy, so you likely wouldn't get a straight answer out of him anyway. The fact that he had the price dropped to the prior-to-repairs cost leads me to believe that the car may have issues that he can't afford to deal with. It might just be an ornament in his garage until he can save money for repairs. If he did sell it, I'd love to hear what he got for it and what kind of chump shelled out money for it. It might now be a parts car for all we know.

 

2 month break from this thread but just caught up...
Surprised that no one pointed out that he had opportunity to offload at 15k cash (supposedly) but then slammed it down 3k... and soon after he did the trans fluid? (notoriously fickle i believe?)
Be that as it may, he DID get it finished ... this was a truly epic thread and i'll be watching out for the next series where Dave & Mike pop up

 

Every other thread will pale in comparison. You will never find a more stupid and ridiculous thread than this one now or in the future. The OP offered more material than I think anybody could have ever expected.

I was one of the people that thought he should've taken that cash at that time.

I haven't seen him in a bit but I'm not on this portion of the forum much. I hope all is well.

 

I think people need to stop commenting on this thread and let it just fade away into obscurity. The OP has obviously given up on it....so for once and the only time we should follow his lead. That almost hurt to type.

 

This thread has faded the same way OP's bumper dents faded away with every hit of a mallet. I hope some where out there is 2007 Benz at the bottom of a cat tail marsh with the OP in the trunk. His skull caved in by the mallet he used to bang the dents out and has bit's of skull and hair embedded in it laying next to him.
