Why buy a W221?

What was your reasoning for buying a W221, and what are your reasons for keeping as long as you have?

I bought mine because of its beautiful, elegant exterior. For its old fashionedly classy fender flairs. Though the post-facelift tail lights are LED and a little more sporty, the pre-facelift tails are ooze of elegance. It's my prediction that in time, the pre tail lights will be worth more than the post.

I thought the wood grain steering wheel and interior dash and button layout were so graceful.

Its size and luxury features are delicious!

I have a strong feeling that it will become one of the greatest S-Class designs. To me, it looks much more elegant and "S-Classeseque" than the W222. Maybe I'm wrong.

Thoughts?

My favorite field commander is the Desert Fox. I feel my Germanic heritage seeping thru my pores as I drive mine. It makes me feel closer to the people who nearly conquered the world two different times in the past 100 years. I can't get over the sheer audacity to pull something like that off. Mercedes represents such a force. You see the emblem and you know you're dealing with some bad ***** ****as who just don't give a god damned ****.

I presume you are talking of tha people who occupied a part of Europe (not the world) and murdered and tortured millions in the process.

Maybe you should try getting some form of treatment . . .

The Germans are a tough people---Mercedes is the very embodiment of this spirit. Their corporate history is very well known.

I've studied the history of Germany in the thirties. That madman led Germany into one of the greatest human tragedies in the history of civilization. It was terrible for many ethic groups, artists, and anyone who opposed or resisted. This includes Germans.
There was terrible suffering all around, and incredible needless loss of human life and dignity.
It was the embodiment of cruelty and inhumanity, not toughness.

But the above is way off topic..
Reasons for buying:
1) Upscale finish and material quality (later versions even nicer)
2) Insulated ride
3) superior handling coupled with #2
4) nice and quick, later versions even quicker
5) safety, crash safety, dynamic safety, telematics (crash notification), safety through mass (4600lbs)
6) Parts and service availablility vs VW Phateon.

I always liked the W221's Styling, plus ive been itching for the right time to make the switch from the BMW to the MB. Unfortunately I do not intend to purchase the W222, I intend to stay with MB but im looking to get into a sportier model.

If you want to understand how Germany lost WWII in the simplest terms, when it came to tanks, planes, boats and subs, Germany was able to build a relatively low number of very costly, very sophisticated, incredibly engineered S Classes, and they got beat by overwhelming swarms of individually inferior Chevy Impalas produced in much greater numbers.

The final iteration of the German Tiger tank was much stronger, quicker, better armored and deadlier than the best US and British tanks. But they took a long time to build because of their complexity, and required extensive field maintenance routines which kept them out of the action (or left them sitting ducks). Crews loved them when they ran, but they were no picnic when they didn't.

Sound familiar? For me, I've always owned S Classes to compensate for my small *****.

^exactly. Germany built tanks to last 20 years in the field, just like they do cars. Unfortunately, the average life expectancy of a tank in the field was about two weeks. Germany's main problem, however were not the American "Chevy Impalas". Russian T-34 was the main reason for German losses on the Eastern Front... Battle of Kursk would be a good example of that

After the war, when Allied forces began uncovering what remained of the German R&D program they were stunned. First production jet fighter, first weaponized rocket system, massive interconnected defensive structures, it goes on and on. The ***** were history's biggest a holes but their engineers did amazing work.

ah yes.

Heavy Gustav

The four-story, 155-foot-long gun, which weighs 1,350 tons, shot 10,000-pound shells from its mammoth 98-foot bore.

When you look at the silhouette of a W221, you know it's a Mercedes. The same could be said for the classic W140 big body S-Class, my last car. Another reason I bought the W221 is because the reliability is vastly improved over the W220 preceding it. If I had to get another W221, I would get one with Distronic plus and Lane Keeping Assist since I put on a lot of miles driving the car for business.

I though that was for truck. And a fiscal compensation by getting the S-class.

That rail gun was phenomenal, but it had obvious mobility problems (they had to lay railroad rails ahead of it) and the barrel was only good for a few shots before it needed to be replaced. I think it was only fired a couple of times.

Hitler was certifiably insane and ordered more and more massive weapons systems, ignoring his generals and sucking Germany's limited natural resources dry. His last chance was to take Russia and the Balkans for oil and rubber, and he got bogged down and decimated that winter and was in retreat mode until the end of the war.

Just think if he had been able to get rocket technology finished to deliver a huge payload to England??? We'd probably all be speaking German and driving Benzs and BMWs.

I bought my S class for it's elegance and interior room. I am a big guy and I need space for my shoulders/arms. Nothing says luxury better than a big Benz unless your going to a Bentley or RR in my opinion. I looked at a few before hand...

Maserati is nice, engine sounds amazing, but not much interior room by comparison. I looked at a few.
I drove a few Lexus and my opinion of them is what it has basically always been. They are nice cars with rock solid reliability, quiet, smooth ride and somewhat roomy, but they are boring and lack the enthusiasm the Germans exhibit while driving.

I gave the Porsche a chance and liked the ride, but I didn't care for the rear styling at all.

I have always had german cars and originally came from a long line of Audi's. Audi's are drivers and can be lot's of fun. They are great cars. The A8 has a lighter feel than the S, but is not on the same level in terms of luxury and it took me finally driving and then owning an S class to admit it. I am very happy with my choice a year later as the car has been very good to me.
