I have a 2012 S550 and am not sure about the COMAND differences vs an '08, but 30-pin dock connector gives full control of an iPod Classic via the Jog Wheel. Of course, my Classic died and Apple stopped selling them, so I had to move to an iPod Touch (thank gork, they offer a 128G model now). If you go the hardwired route, be sure you buy an official Apple 30-pin to Lightning cable. The cheap ones for sale on Amazon do not work in the car.
