Question Removing battery from 2012 S550

Greetings all,

I'm having a devil of a time getting the battery out of the engine compartment of my 2012 S550. Both terminals have been disconnected and the small metal hold-down strap has been removed, but the battery won't budge.

Are there additional hold downs towards the bottom of the battery or are the batteries just jammed in there?

Thanks much,
MB

There is a clamp at the base of the battery furthest away from the fender that you need to loosen. Battery comes out pretty easy once the clamps are removed.

Right you are, superpop!

One needs a 13mm socket and quite a long extender to reach it, but it comes out pretty easily. I wedge a little gaffer's tape within the socket to the bolt upon re-installation.

If only Mercedes would provide the slightest slack on the positive battery cable muscling that 60lb battery back in would have been a lot easier.

One final note. There was a small forest of dead leaves in, under and around the battery tray, so have a shopvac handy the next time you change out your battery.

I actually took the battery tray out and cleaned the whole area. Don't forget to plug in the vent hose to the side of the new battery.

Oh, yes. Interestingly, the plastic red terminal protector, provided by Duralast, had a small instruction booklet taped to it explaining just that. First time I've ever seen the vent hole on a battery.
