Key issues

My key to unlock the car stopped working a few days ago. I changed the battery and it flashed red lips guy once when I put the key portion with the batteries in the key part.

After reassembled when I push a button the ref light doesn't match up. One of the silver metal battery holders has gone loose. I taped it back with no luck. Any ideas to fix?

Also, the metal key by itself will not open the driver's door. Does this mean there might be something with the central locking system?

The key still only lights up red once when I slide in the battery portion. Alarm also sounds frequently.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

Let me clarify: The metal key will not lock the front driver door.

According to the manual I can get it to unlock if I pull the handle quickly after unlocking.

But how do I lock my door - if the wireless key is shot and when I close the door it automatically remains unlocked?

Thank you.

Simple: Open a rear door, manually push the locks at each door, then close the rear door. Just beware that when you unlock the door with the metal key, it will trigger the alarm. You may need to jump in the car quickly and get the smart key into the ignition to shut it off.

Excellent; good call.

What do you think is wrong with my key? Works when in ignition (pulls power from ignition).

blinks red light once when battery installed and then no further red lights when buttons pushed.

I haven't got a clue what is wrong with your key. If the battery is good, it could be a broken connection on the battery terminals or something wrong with the circuit board. You may want to call a local dealer to see how much they'd charge you to test and inspect your key. It may be something fixable or something that would require an all new key at around $350 a pop.

I just tested my key with the battery pack taken out. I was able to start my car without it. Which means that the problem with your key is in the battery pack. I'm assuming that the battery pack is not a part that is married to your car, so perhaps you can pick up a used key on Ebay, pull the battery pack out of it, and insert into your key to get it working (assuming that they key you get is from the same year and is a working part).

Or you can spend $26 and use the battery pack from a new unprogrammed key. This one is from China, but for the price, it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

My coworker has a Mercedes key. I swapped out the internals of his key with mine to no avail. I also used his workIng batteries in mine.

bottom line is the key is probably dead.
