Misfire, spark plug or ignition coil

random misfire in just ONE cylinder in both banks of my 07 S600. Being that the check engine light has been intermittent; sometimes coming on/going off for several days or weeks at a time; could this be more related to plugs or would the coils need replaced? I'm getting P0306 and P0311 (cyl6 and cyl11)

Obviously, I'm hoping it's not the ignition coil as both would require replacing, any assistance is greatly appreciate

Here's a couple of my posts on the subject:

https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...tion-data.html

https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...placement.html

The first being about diagnosis and, the second, a How-To...

Read them both... My guess, for me, came down to a coil pack, which apparently was correct, in that, the problem hasn't returned

But, since you're getting misfire from both sides, I'd guess plugs for you. When were they last replaced? Recommended is every 60K...

Good luck and please post what you ultimately find for the rest of us.

Regards... Mark

plugs closer to the fw go first. so my guess is plugs.

mileage? the v12 is rough on plugs. they are rated for 100k miles or thereabouts but in reality they go much much sooner especially if operated in hot climates.

I would change the spark plugs first and see what that does. It is the least expensive attempt at resolving the problem. After the spark plugs are changed, then look at the ignition module or coil pack. With it being on two different sides, it could just be the spark plugs. In many cases, a bad coil pack with cause 6 cylinders on the same side to misfire.

Once you change the plugs, (assuming you are doing it yourself) you will be familiar enough with the disassembly of the parts of the engine to easily change the coil pack if that ends up being required.

Is there any way to differentiate whether it's the voltage transformer or the coil?

Either device if fails generally will snow misfires on 1-6 or 7-12. You have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. Visit www.v12icpack.com and read the info there and watch the videos. Since both parts are the same price, it is an expensive gamble to make, and he can rent a VT and allow you to test it. Quick and easy to connect, and will point you in the right direction. Plugs are important to keep changed in the cars, as multiple misfires can damage a coil pack and O2/ catalytic converters, etc.
